Hi guys!

I got carried away and wrote some rather long meta on Vegas and colours and Vegas!John. I don't know if it will be interesting to anyone, but I hope so. :)

Warning: both parts are image heavy.

After such a long trip back home I haven't even had the energy to write my Squee Weekend report, but this fic idea I was thinking about isn't leaving me alone, and there's one thing in particular that bothers me: is being a pilot, or flying, an integral part of John Sheppard's personality?

I'm doing a song inspired fic (To Speak Is A Sin by Pet Shop Boys), an AU, and I found myself thinking about this. Is flying something John has such a passion for, that he always finds some way to do it? Would he go nuts if confined to life on the ground? If he's not a pilot, what else could he be, that would satisfy his need? Did he join the military just to annoy his father, or because it was an easy way out of the future planned for him, or was it something that he felt was the right thing for him to do?

It's been too long since I've rewatched enough SGA to answer this with certainty, and I don't want to write him to be a pilot just because that's what he was on the show, so please help me out fellow fans, and let me know what you think! :)

Once again it seems I can't just go and write a simple little story, but get stuck on thinking about the things behind things *sigh*

Ok, going back to pondering now, and recovering from the flights...

Martin Firrell is releasing a bit more information about his Men and Women of Sci-fi project that he's been working on for the last couple of years. I ran across this article today and it gives a link to his new website Metascifi--as well as tells a little bit about what it will offer. Unfortunately the link to the site didn't work for me, but it looks very exciting! TONS of actors and actresses from all kinds of sci-fi series are a part of this (I saw David Nykls, Torri Higginson, and Joe Flanigan in this article alone)--and the interview, in which Firrell reveals some details about the project and what it will mean, shares a fanboy moment from his interview with Joe Flanigan. So worth checking out.

It sounds like it's going to be pretty awesome--kind of an ongoing public conversation about sci-fi, with new material being added regularly. I love how dedicated Nathan Fillion was to being part of the project, despite the pressures of filming Castle. But then he's just a big fanboy himself! :D

I was watching the season opener of Battle of the Blades (a unique CANADIAN mashup of pairs skating involving hockey players with figure skaters) when they showed historical footage of a skater going by on the ice with the name "McKay" on the jersey, along with #21. So, of course, I just had to check him out. Here's what I found:

Randall McKay
Born January 25, 1967 in Montreal, Quebec
Drafted by Detroit and played his entire career in the U.S. until his final pro year (2002-2003) when he was back in his hometown with the Montreal Canadiens.

Somebody SO needs to write a story where Rodney drags the entire team back to Canada and not to Jeannie's place in Vancouver ... but to Montreal to see his cousin, even if the timing doesn't work out to watch him still playing. Montreal in the wintertime is grotesquely cold (a bunch of us decided to run to a now-gone famous deli at 2:00 a.m. many decades ago), so it would be funny to hear Rodney bitching and Randy telling him to suck it up, that the (Fort) McMurray McKays are just as hardy as the Montreal McKays.

Anyway, I just HAD to SQUEE!!!!!

Even better if Randall realises that John is in love with his cousin. I know - I have great dreams, lol. And fic ideas, too!

I just finished reading an e-newsletter about the unknown dangers of anaphylaxis and a campaign to educate the public by Julie Bowen (of Modern Family). Here's what it said (bolded area EXTREMELY relevant):

NOTE: Common symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction, which can happen anywhere from five to 30 minutes after exposure, include a red, usually itchy rash; a swollen throat or swollen areas of the body; wheezing; passing out; chest tightness; trouble breathing; a hoarse voice; trouble swallowing; vomiting; diarrhea; stomach cramping; a pale or red color to the face and body; and even a feeling of impending doom, according to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology. While anaphylaxis is often talked about in the context of children—who are less likely to have encountered possible allergens yet and therefore may not realize that they cause problems—it can affect people of all ages.
The details amazed me and so I wonder if one of TPTB had more than a second-hand knowledge of anaphylaxis because the "feeling of impending doom" is something we came to expect of Rodney and his loathing of those enforced nature walks on unknown worlds, not to mention running for their lives back to the Stargate. But we attributed that to HIM instead of to his allergies.

We haven't always taken Rodney's apprehension and complaints seriously (neither did his teammates) but, considering the above, it's no wonder he carried such fears with him everywhere. It's also a shame that this aspect of his character was played more for laughs instead of launching an educational campaign to inform the public.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share because of that highlighted passage.

Just to give you all an idea of how SGA's lighting director(s) help and hinder with the screencaps, I thought I'd show you one of the more extreme examples from this episode. Yes, they wanted to give us the whole "alien atmosphere" concept but it's a real pain in the ass sometimes, especially when you run across a terrific cap of the characters but it's wrecked by the lighting.

I wish I knew more about this... )
