I just finished reading an e-newsletter about the unknown dangers of anaphylaxis and a campaign to educate the public by Julie Bowen (of Modern Family). Here's what it said (bolded area EXTREMELY relevant):

NOTE: Common symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction, which can happen anywhere from five to 30 minutes after exposure, include a red, usually itchy rash; a swollen throat or swollen areas of the body; wheezing; passing out; chest tightness; trouble breathing; a hoarse voice; trouble swallowing; vomiting; diarrhea; stomach cramping; a pale or red color to the face and body; and even a feeling of impending doom, according to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology. While anaphylaxis is often talked about in the context of children—who are less likely to have encountered possible allergens yet and therefore may not realize that they cause problems—it can affect people of all ages.
The details amazed me and so I wonder if one of TPTB had more than a second-hand knowledge of anaphylaxis because the "feeling of impending doom" is something we came to expect of Rodney and his loathing of those enforced nature walks on unknown worlds, not to mention running for their lives back to the Stargate. But we attributed that to HIM instead of to his allergies.

We haven't always taken Rodney's apprehension and complaints seriously (neither did his teammates) but, considering the above, it's no wonder he carried such fears with him everywhere. It's also a shame that this aspect of his character was played more for laughs instead of launching an educational campaign to inform the public.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share because of that highlighted passage.

and even a feeling of impending doom

I never realized that, it sure puts another perspective on things. Thank you for sharing! And yes, it is a shame it got played for laughs and no doubt why I love stories where his team carry epi-pens and know how to use them for Rodney's sake.

Nice post. I agree, having allergies myself, that it's no laughing matter. But I've noticed that people without any allergies often don't take allergies, especially people worrying about their allergies, seriously. Their attitude is poorly masked impatience, much like we see on the show....so it's at least reflecting reality.

I've always felt that his allergies were real...why else would he have such a reaction to the lemon when Cam threatened him with it.....but yes the impending doom is a rear but real reaction that I have yet to see without one of the other symptoms......

I've known a few people now with severe allergies and they have to be careful everywhere, because just kissing someone who's eaten that food without brushing their teeth and rinsing their mouth thoroughly can cause an allergic reaction. And lots of people are so casual about it. As in, if it doesn't affect us, I don't see why I can't enjoy my favorite food just because they're allergic to it. I think so much of this informs Rodney's character. You're right, TPB could have used this to educate instead of ridiculing Rodney, again, I think that's why Rodney always told people. They just didn't get that it could kill him dead!

This explains a great deal about Rodney and his outlook. I feel bad for him - I can't imagine fearing everything you eat. I love fics that explore his allergy problems (though it goes hand in hand with my love of Rodney whump, so.)

Often times Rodney was played for laughs. One episode he can competently shoot a target, the next he can't. It's too bad a serious medical condition is something they just played with. (Including his hypoglycemia.)

In real life, David Hewlett is allergic to pineapple. It makes his lips swell. He says he carries around an epipen, although it's long expired.

I agree, I never liked how they made the Character Rodney out to be a hypochondriac instead of actually taking a few of his fears and showing how he truly knew what he was talking about and maybe someone should listen to him for once. ;-D You know?
