do you dream in color?

Do you remember your dreams?
Has a dream ever led to a story idea?
When I remember my dreams there is usually a splash of color somewhere in it but the entire dream might not be in color.
And yes. I've written more than one story based off a dream.

three weeks for dw
Apr. 25th, 2026 07:38 pmI started out on Livejournal. I stuck with it for ... longer than a lot did, despite its occasional fits.
The requirement to agree to the Russian terms of service was the last straw. Sort of.
I shared mod duties with a couple of communities on both DW and LJ - and I still post over at LJ occasionally.
There are warm fuzzies for what LJ used to be, but boy am I glad I imported it all to Dreamwidth when I had the chance.
Now I'm here. I have been for quite awhile, and growing more comfy with it every day.

Fannish 50 2026 #16: competition and Stargate characters
Apr. 25th, 2026 10:58 amIt made me think about fandom characters, because what else is what we do in life except a reason to think about fandom? And how Daniel and Rodney are both brilliant scientists, doing cutting edge work in their respective fields, and yet, their views on competition vary so radically. Movie!Daniel especially, is so very excited at what's he's uncovering, and delighted to share, and somewhat confused at why people aren't responsive. He's thrilled to go live on an alien planet so he can keep researching and is not at all concerned about his discoveries being recognized by his peers.
OTOH, Rodney keeps working on top secret projects but absolutely wants that recognition, even if he knows he'll have to wait another decade or two. He craves acknowledgement, especially in the form of medals and prizes. He's brilliant and he deserves it, goddamnit.
O'Neil-O'Neill and Sheppard are both in non-competitive mindsets when their shows start. Movie!Jack is of course traumatized by the death of his son and accepts a suicide mission. Sheppard has been slapped down by the brass for trying to rescue friends and is quite content with his banishment. (Though also rattles off all the vehicles he can fly to a general, I feel the case could be made that he's not as mellow as he appears.)
Sheppard is delighted when he gets his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. He might be focused on defeating the Wraith, but yeah, he'll beam with that extra recognition. I don't remember how O'Neill reacted to being promoted to General, I think he was more cranky about it? 'Ugh, more administration, I guess I gotta do this' attitude?
I would see O'Neill and Sheppard as fairly similar growing up, kids that liked sports and being athletic and were overall good at most, but also indoctrinated into being good sportsmen. I wouldn't expect either to cheat or sulk (much) if they lost.
Sam Carter really ought to be one of the most competitive characters on the show. Being a successful woman in two different fields is still an achievement that isn't handed to anyone. There's a little bit at the beginning, she's assertive about being on the team, but then mostly it feels like it gets dropped in favor of her being a supportive, loyal sidekick character.
Growing up in an agrarian society, being competition in terms of craving promotions or special recognition is not something Teyla would necessarily even imagine. Possibly her role as the leader of the village is an inherited position, but she is good at it. Her competitive nature is directed at taking care of her people, it's more maternal than cutthroat, but clearly she's up for challenges.
Teal'c also is a leader among his peers, though he's grown up in a closed society dictated by the ruler. Like Teyla, he's going to do what he perceives as best for his people, though it's definitely in a warrior way.
Poor Ford. He gets so little screen time. I know very little about the military but I assume he's gotta be somewhat competitive to be a lieutenant. Certainly he does his duty and does it well, generally gets along with people (though not always with the scientists) but I cannot think of a single moment where we learn anything about his future dreams.
Well, that's probably enough rambling about characters' competitive natures. My memory is mediocre, I can absolutely be contradicted if someone remembers moments that shed a different view on these characters. It was fun to think about. Fandom makes life better IMO.
Fiddling on
Apr. 25th, 2026 02:20 pmI mailordered a bunch of things on the basis of why not while I still can, and am now faced with needing to tidy and reorganise my spare room and garage to store stuff. Ugh. I'm too physically lazy to be a survivalist.
Maybe I can hire a boy scout? Do boy scouts still exist? I also need the boy scout to change bulbs in my kitchen as I don't think I'm safe on a stepstool any more. Rats. I got my second shingles vax and over the next two weeks will get a flu shot and covid booster.
Lots of rain and thunderstorms recently but still many nice days, although temps have dropped so definitely autumnal. The liquidamber trees are bronzing up - the main tree that reliably has autumn colours here in the subtropics. I'm going to revamp a couple of my wheeliebeds and plant kale and spinach, also pansies are available, so yay. Potted colour for interesting times.
On the HR front, have been arting, and posted another podfic. Lots of fiddling!
Ilya and Friend - portrait of a contemplative Ilya with rabbit (kind of for Easter)
cut to the feeling - podfic of Charlotte_Stant's wonderful fic
Collectors Items - picked up 4 art pinch hits for the ICE OUT donations challenge. This one is hollanov in Topps card format.
Everyone's Issue - for ICE OUT. A mental health poster format with Shane and Ilya.
Best t-shirt ever - Scott/Kip, domestic fluff, for ICE OUT.
I got you something - Troy/Harris and the NY Pride pin for ICE OUT
podfic of Torture Me (With All I've Wanted) - excellent fic by toomuchplor (teenage Shane/Ilya bonding on a long bus ride)
HR recs:
(I've lost track of who reccd what so some of these will already have been reccd by friends.)
Retirement, apparently by cheryl123
Hilarious romp of crack taken seriously. Post retirement from hockey, Shane and Ilya end up in VERY different reality tv shows, with iconic results.
Knock on Wood by McShrug
Hot as hell fic in which "just the tip" becomes part of Shane's superstitious pregame playoffs ritual.
Is this thing on? by arustyspork
I saw this ask on tumblr - someone suggested a post-retirement fic where Shane and Svetlana have a hockey podcast together. Arustyspork took up the baton, and it's marvellous! They have a segment called "why Ilya Rozanov owes me money" in which guests relate terrible/funny things Ilya did to them. They won't let Ilya himself come on the show and it drives him crazy!
i carry your heart by corvidcordelia
A complete AU where they're competing literary fiction writers having rivalrous sex in a retelling of the show. CC adds in mocked-up covers for their bestsellers and extremely real-feeling & pretentious rave critic reviews, plus quotes from Cummings and Austen. Brilliantly done. As usual, Svetlana and Rose (their literary agents) do some emotional heavy lifting.
And, new to me HR writers that I'm now reading everything of:
ghoulien

Okay, enough for now! Today was supposed to be a writing day, ha.
Hugs to you all!

Apr. 21st, 2026 01:23 pmWeird times (CW for apocalyptic musings)
Apr. 21st, 2026 02:19 amI've been ruminating in a confused way about that, since Friday. Will it be the start of supply line collapse here, as we're at the far end of that chain, in worldwide terms? Or just a period of restrictions, annoyances and a degree of belt tightening? It'll affect two things massively - transport, and farming. Like, the trucks that bring food and essentials to supermarkets, and deliver groceries to us, and in the longer term, it'll affect the farms growing the food.
Bring an old bastard who's profoundly unfit and who doesn't get out much, there's not a lot I can do for others, except maybe to help my immediate neighbours in some way. And I vacillate between vague prepping notions, nihilism, and thinking it'll turn out to be nothing after all. But I read apocafics, so I wonder. I mean, my car's petrol tank is fairly full and I use it only occasionally, but if it runs out will there still be buses? Which doubtless run on diesel. And if petrol gets harder to come by will people start stealing it, like, siphoning it off from cars parked outside like mine is, close to the road?
The fuel crisis expert guy in the article, Nathan Surendran, recommends talking to neighbours to prepare, but I'd definitely feel weird if I did that. At this point, anyway, when things alternate between feeling totally normal or like we're all fiddling while Rome burns. Or doesn't burn, due to the lack of diesel.
Guess I'll get an extra grocery delivery in, and make sure I have seeds in case I need to clear my garden beds of flowers and plant veggies more seriously. And I did unearth my camping gas stove and lamp in the last "cyclone", but I think we'll have power, as most of our grid runs on hydroelectricity (with the parts to repair the power stations probably delivered by diesel-powered trucks).
Well, we'll see if this is anything. Covid was fast. A week or three of worrying reports then (for us, here) whammo, lockdown. It felt surreal at the time. This is like that pre-Covid prodromal period with some signs and warnings cropping up but no one here taking it seriously, mostly. And our government now is largely shits and idiots, not a decent crisis leader like Jacinta, who actually listened to experts.
I'll keep fiddling, and let you know how it goes.
Too good not to share.
Apr. 18th, 2026 03:45 pmCribbed from Marilyn's Facebook page, a song about Rome's Nero, which directly references the current U.S "Nero" in office. Doesn't solve anything, but nice to see folks being aware.
