Because this also deserves a post.
Mar. 24th, 2011 05:49 pmI absolutely loved this scene in Sunday! Also to everyone who replied in the previous post I made, I added you all as friends. I hope you don't mind!
And now, a bit of getting to know one another on an SGA level. Tell me your:
Favorite Character:
Favorite Pairing:

Least Favorite Pairing:
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc:
I'll go first!
Favorite Character: It's a toss up between John Sheppard and Rodney McKay. I generally don't think of them as separate characters, because they've always just been McShep to me, but for the sake of this little questionnaire, I'll say John Sheppard. And that was chosen by a rousing game of Eenie Meenie Miney Mo.
Favorite Pairing: McShep, hands down, with Teyla/Ronon as a close second.
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Doppelganger, for the simple reason that dark!John is incredibly hot.
Least Favorite Character: Kanaan, just because he was a big part of the end of Season 4 story arc that I hated.
Least Favorite Pairing: It's a tie between Teyla/Kanaan and McKeller.
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc: The Teyla-goes-missing arc at the end of S4. I understand they needed something for her character because the actress was pregnant, but it was horrible. They should have just sent her to mainland for a 9 month long party with the Athosians or something.

Date: 2011-03-24 10:32 pm (UTC)Favourite Pairing: I like gen best, but if I have to ship my pairing is McKay/any female
Favourite Episode/Story Arc: Be All My Sins Remember'd, Tao of Rodney, Duet, Grace Under Pressure (any Rodney-centric!)
I removed the 'least fav' questions as per the next commenter - no squee harshing here! ;)

Date: 2011-03-24 10:55 pm (UTC)Favorite Pairing: In this fandom, I'm more of a gen reader with the occasional rarepair, but I'll give just about anything a go at least once on a rec or if it's been made into podfic.
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Hrmm. The Eye/The Storm, Trinity, Sunday (I love slice of life) and Trio. Lots of reasons, mostly because the first one is so intense and involves the kind of down-and-dirty, against-the-odds kind of scuffles I love to watch and the rest for being such strong character pieces.

Date: 2011-03-25 12:22 am (UTC)Favorite Pairing:Sparky (John/Elizabeth), McShep and Ronon/Teyla
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Common Ground, it has everything a girl like me wants, bondage (including a neat use of a gag), Shep!Whump, latent Sparky and Acastus Kolya (the rivalry between the two men had always intrigued me)

Date: 2011-03-25 12:29 am (UTC)Favorite Character: I can really identify with character traits from both John and Rodney, but I'd have to say at heart, I'm a John girl.
Favorite Pairing: McShep. I read other pairings, I enjoy some other pairings--in some people's hands they can make me believe in other pairings, but my heart belongs to the boys.
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Doppelganger, The Last Man, Vegas, Duet, The Arc, Grace Under Pressure, Common Ground... oh heck, why don't I just list them all? I thought the Arc was well done and under-rated. I might be just a wee bit obsessed with Vegas and CG. :-)
I can't really think of a favorite arc. Arcs really weren't something TPTB did very well...
Least Favorite Character: Keller. She simply was too young, inexperienced, and lacking in self-confidence to be the Chief Medical Officer. I would have dealt with it if she'd remained a secondary character, but she seemed to be the post around which many stories revolved once she became a regular. I couldn't help thinking, "Damn, I wish Janet Frasier were alive, because she'd make a HELLUVA CMO!"
Least Favorite Pairing: It would have to be McKeller. And not, as I'm sure some might think, because it 'interfered' with my OTP. I know I'm never going to see my OTP on a show--in fact, I prefer not to! I get a much bigger kick looking for the subtext than watching it actually unfold! It had more to do with the lack of chemistry between the actors (that's what drives *all* my ships!) and the fact that Jennifer seemed bent on 'changing' Rodney--a relationship killer if I've ever seen one. I thought Ronon and Keller had *tons* more chemistry together! *remembers scene in infirmary in Quarantine and fans self*
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc: By the time Michael was creating zombies in Whispers, I was grinding my teeth and rolling my eyes...
Hmmm. I see some of the commenters below eliminated some of the questions on the basis of not wanting to harsh anyone's squee. I can respect that, but I can also entertain lively debate, so I'm not sure what to do about answering them here.
One of the best discussions I ever had in fandom took place here when I made a statement about John doing something OOC. The discussion from other viewpoints opened up my eyes to the possibility they were right and I was wrong. So, I guess I'm leaving my answers as they stand. If that's the wrong thing to do, then let me know and I'll retract them. ;-)

Date: 2011-03-25 12:32 am (UTC)Also: I'm curious to know what you thought John did that was OOC!

Date: 2011-03-25 01:08 am (UTC)The user info indicates that it is also open for discussion as to what we'd like to have seen, what bothered us, what we would have done had we been in the director's chair. So I think it is fair to say that your post fits that criteria nicely.
As for the OOC John moment, I thought his reaction to Teyla being pregnant was very CaveMan and the degree of anger and unreasonableness he showed out of character. Enough people pointed out that he probably was reacting after the fact to the potential for serious injury on the last mission that I began to see their POV.
In fact, I came around to the idea that as someone who prided himself as a tactician, John *would* have been pissed at not having all the available information at his disposal. ;-)

Date: 2011-03-25 01:43 am (UTC)Favorite Character: John Sheppard
Favorite Pairing: Gen only...not a shipper
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: So many...Love Rising, the Return, Coup d'état, Critical Mass, Doppelganger, Common Ground, Sateda, The Shrine, Vegas...baby.
Least Favorite Character: OMG...I am going to be so ostracized from the community...I know it...I have not liked Teyla since Letters from Pegasus. OK…I said it. This little exchange did not sit well with me:
SHEPPARD: I said that I'd wait for your friend if there was time. Now there's time. What else do you want from me?
TEYLA: Too much, I fear.
Sheppard had already risked his life for her people and she expected more. Nah…not happy with that; hated the pregnancy arc, always the kiss of death for a TV show, and, besides, she wasn't truthful with Sheppard. She did not tell him about her pregnancy…they were really close weren't they? So close, she couldn't confide in him. Yet she was always portrayed as Miss Perfect. So there's my little secret. That said, when I write her character, I stick to canon and keep her as Miss Perfect just like she was portrayed. Good thing I'm not a fan of AU.....
To
Least Favorite Pairing: McKay and Keller...just because it didn't feel right, no spark there.
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Sunday, Sunday, Sunday (Both loved and hated). Hated, hated the Michael/Teyla baby arc...
I do like that we can discuss these things, I think it's good that we don't pretend when we don't like something. I love action/adventure gen stories. I am certainly not opposed to romance, and I have read some well-written het and slash, but just not my thing.
OK...let me have it...it could have been worse, I could have said I didn't like Elizabeth. But I did....

Date: 2011-03-25 02:29 am (UTC)For me, the moment that I realized how much I liked Teyla was the mess hall scene at the end of McKay & Mrs. Miller - when the fellas were razzing her about crushing on a Marine - her reaction was so funny and charming. (Does this come off like I'm trying to sell her? I swear I am not, it just made me think of it.)
I hated Sunday, too. It was really disappointing given how awesome a slice-of-life-in-Atlantis episode could have been.

Date: 2011-03-25 02:55 am (UTC)I remember the Teyla scene you are talking about, and it was cute. I just didn't like the way she was written, as if she was some warrior princess who always had the right comment, or the right emotion. She was simply too perfect...And you are so right...it's funny what a character does or says can make us love them or hate them. Sort of like RL!!!
Ps...not a shipper but I LOVE your icon...very clever.

Date: 2011-03-25 03:05 am (UTC)I do know what you mean about Teyla being too perfect. I think that's a difficult part of her character. Especially because it can come off as condescending or cartoonish (like Earth Mother, "Indian Princess").
Thanks so much! :)

Date: 2011-03-25 04:33 am (UTC)I think the pregnancy scene was *meant* to convey the cultural differences between the Athosians and the expedition--and yet it failed to take into consideration, as you said, that being pregnant was something Teyla would have likely shared with her friends and team mates.
I can't help but wonder if the writers/producers were a little afraid of making Teyla more human. Lord knows I've seen a lot of backlash over character portrayals before--I remember reading someone's furious post where they wrote that Teyla would *never* have killed Michael, that it went against all her principles, and my reaction at the time was WTF? :-)
On the other hand, I remember how she lost her cool with Bates at the end of season one. I like to think that Teyla grew up exhibiting a strong temper and that she's worked for years to control it. :-)

Date: 2011-03-25 11:45 am (UTC)I'm not so sure about his actions being out of character though--I think his experiences at the hands of the expedition made him insane. Just once, I would have liked a single line of dialog acknowledging that...
Seems to me, a lot could have been alluded to if the writers had added just a line here or there.
Hmmm. I know what you mean about the sci-fi theme in pregnant actresses. I thought SG-1 did a very good job of hiding the fact that Amanda Tapping was pregnant at the time, though! :-)

Date: 2011-03-25 02:15 am (UTC)Favorite Character: I don't know, I go back and forth between John and Rodney. Can I choose Team?
Favorite Pairing: John/Rodney's one of my favorite pairings ever, and really the only one I care for on SGA.
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: I really love Shrine and Vegas, but Defiant One's really excellent, and so is Hide & Seek, the Storm/the Eye.
Least Favorite Character: I think it's probably Jennifer Keller. I've read some really good Keller/Ronon and Keller/Teyla fiction, but I've kind of come to the realization that she just doesn't click for me.
Least Favorite Pairing: Canon? Keller/McKay
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc: I didn't like the Michael-Teyla-Torren arc. When they first started it, I was between thinking, "Cool, Teyla is going to really kick ass and take names," but it kind of just meant that Michael's character (which I don't care for either way) was subverted and out of character, the Athosians were screwed, and it seemed like Teyla was gone for ages. Either that or the Hoffman thing. Beckett made enough crappy decisions as a geneticist that the Hoffman thing was just like, "Are you serious???"

Date: 2011-03-25 04:59 am (UTC)I can never tell which I like better - season one or season two. Season one has so much promise and excitement and Shep featured PROMINENTLY, but season two had a bunch of great John-Rodney moments (and Ronon came on the show). They're both so fun and lovely.

Favorite Episode/Story Arc: I loved season 4. Doppelganger especially.
Otherwise, The Shrine is my favourite episode. I loved the love between John and Rodney and John’s devotion.
Least Favorite Character: Kavanaugh or Ford
Least Favorite Pairing: Elizabeth and John or Rodney and Katie
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Harmony was dreadful. Season 1 was not as good as subsequent episodes. I hated the last episode because it wsa the last episode.

Date: 2011-03-25 02:57 am (UTC)But I feel that way about Whispers - it totally clashes with the rest of the series and, I know it's nitpicky, but I just roll my eyes whenever John's supposed to be surprised by meeting and all-female team. I mean, he's the one who assigns teams, so why in god's name would he be surprised?

Date: 2011-03-25 03:13 am (UTC)Oh! Yes, I can see that. I've always thought of it as a John's-kinda-sexist joke, which annoyed me greatly because, cmon, yeah right. I like it sooo much better as John's-clueless. I like clueless-John! ;);)
I enjoyed seeing Carson flirt in that one.
I'm not a big Carson fan, so I suppose part of it's missing on me.

Date: 2011-03-25 03:48 am (UTC)Personally, by that point, I think Mallozzi was determined to make John look stupid. I mean, come on! You're in a bad situation on a world where creepy things come out at night---so you split the group up and take half to the next village--at night??
Yes to John being surprised at the all-female team. He's CO for crying out loud. He'd *know* that! And the high-five between him and Beckett? Give me a break...

Date: 2011-03-25 05:46 am (UTC)Favorite Character: John Sheppard
Favorite Pairing: McShep (although I generally like anything that have Sheppard in it. lol)
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Only one?! It really depends on my mood. Some days it's 'Search and Rescue' and others it 'Conversion', or like today 'Rising'.
Least Favorite Character: Keller (mainly because they tried to make her the idiot blond and the CMO at the same time. Writing women was not the TPTB strong suit.)
Least Favorite Pairing: McKeller (not that I'd object to Rodney having a love life, but that relationship felt so forced and I didn't believe either character would even like the other. If they had tried to spread it out over a few season, I would have been more open to a gradual thing.)
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Brain Storm. Not so much for the McKeller, although to be honest I didn't like that, but the unbelievable medical shit they had in that episode. They used CPR to revive someone who was suffering from hypothermia, then didn't even dry her off and yet after all that she feels up to sex?! Really?!

Date: 2011-03-25 05:24 pm (UTC)Favourite Pairing: John/Rodney...though I wouldn't say no to Rodney/anyone-but-Keller!
Favourite Episode/Story Arc: Too many favorites to name but Rising, Inferno, The Storm/The Eye, The Siege, Intruder, Doppelganger. There are a few Rodney-centric episodes that came so close like the The Shrine... and I actually liked Enemy at the Gate (if you ignore the final 30 secs of both The Shrine and EATG!)

Date: 2011-03-25 08:29 pm (UTC):-D
Favorite Character: Sheppard, closely followed by McKay. Yeah, I'm SO original. Kolya is my favourite villain, he's amazing, and I like Carson and Keller too (I like every doctor I come along except for the medical whatever bitch in SGU, but then I can't watch SGU), and Lorne is sorely underused in canon. Why, oh why - he's hot and loyal and practically perfect in every way.
Favorite Pairing: McShep. I can like Sheppard/Lorne too, if it's well written.
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: The shrine, Vegas, Common ground.
Least Favorite Character: Michael.
Least Favorite Pairing: John/Teyla.
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc: anything with Michael in it.

Date: 2011-03-27 01:10 am (UTC)Favorite Character: Rodney. He's petty, arrogant, and bad with people, and I love him for it. However, my love for Jeannie might actually be slightly stronger, my intense love for Sam holds over from SG-1, and John is truly my favorite dork.
Favorite Pairing: I'm really a gen fan at heart, in this fandom. I want ridiculously long plotty epics. But I love McShep, have a strange fondness for John/Jennifer/Rodney, enjoy Jennifer/Ronon, think John/Ronon's pretty awesome, and have a (again, held over from SG-1) thing for Sam/Rodney.
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: McKay and Mrs. Miller. I love Jeannie so much you don't even know.
Least Favorite Character: Carson. I can't tell you why I dislike him, but I really do.
Least Favorite Pairing: John/Elizabeth. It doesn't work for me at all. Followed closely by McKeller, which I think would only end in one hell of a messy divorce (and yet, like I said, I like the threesome. I don't know.)
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Oh, that's easy. Brainstorm. I hate the initial Michael arc - I don't think there's a single character I actually like in those episodes. Not one. But I still find them watchable, which is more than I can say for Brainstorm, so.

Date: 2011-03-27 03:47 am (UTC)Favorite Character: Lorne. (Though a very close second is Grodin. In fact a friend dragged me into the fandom for Grodin but forgot to mention that itsy bitsy scene in The Siege I where he turns to space dust.)
Favorite Pairing: Lorne/and basically anyone
Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Runner. Hands down the snark is some of the best (I actually have a shirt w/ a half dozen or so Runner quotes on it)
Least Favorite Episode/Story Arc: Siege Part 1. Like I said before I got dragged into SGA because of Grodin (My best friend "Come on you'll love it! There's this really awesome British character and he's totally your type of squee material!") but she 'forgot' to mention the scene where he turns to Space dust. (The conversation after I found that out was all "He's dead! DEAD! SPACE DUST! And you didn't tell me that he's DEAD?!" *realizes she's in the dairy aisle.* "Uh can I call you back later? We need to discuss this more." *hangs up phone and leaves store quickly*)
