The first time I saw a Stargate hanging space it took my breath away. I kid you not. It is still one of the most riveting sights that exists in science fiction. Besides, it's just dang beautiful.
It is, so beautiful ^_^ And to me the thought that you could have a gate in space was intriguing, like why would be up there and not on the planet, did they have gates like that in places where there are no planets, etc. And I love that Pegasus gates look different from the Milky Way Gates ^_^
It is pretty, and alien, and exciting... but part of me always thinks of how deadly it is to anyone without a spaceship :(
(Did you watch SGU at all? In that show, they discovered an Ancient 'road construction' ship with a vast hold full of stargates all ready to be put in place and added to the network. The Ancients worked on an unimaginably huge scale.)
I would hope the Ancients put a failsafe on the plantary gates so that they would only dial a spacegate via a puddlejumper DHD or something similar.
If not, all that running Ronon did was even more dangerous. And with the Ancients, you can't be too sure. (I would imagine the Atlantis gate could dial anywhere they wanted since they were the ones that built the gate system. Hmm, I wonder if there is an episode that addresses that. Then again I suppose the DHD could be tampered with... oh my.
I did see a half dozen episodes of SGU. I wanted to like it soooo bad. I missed my Stargate. I really liked the premise and 'seeding' the gates was a fascinating bit of Ancient history.
Elizabeth and the replicators walked through the gate to deep space and froze... but they weren't human, so I don't know. The Ancients didn't really seem keen on the whole failsafe idea, though. Things like the Attero device could sure have used one.
I loved all the new technology and spaceships and aliens in SGU. I hated most of the characters. It was such a strange thing to be watching the show every week and feeling emotionally divorced instead of invested...
I was thinking of that exact episode! But it makes sense that the Ancients would design the Atlantis gate to dial anywhere. They built the dang thing after all. Still, either option makes for interesting story telling.

Yes! This! I did love Eli and I wanted to like the others. The weeping, petty jealousy and the way they abused the communication stones ended it for me. So sad.
To be fair, I hated the way they used the communication stones in SG-1. Danial and Vala wake up peachy-fine but theie counterparts -who were only caught because they weren't in control of the decisions - ended up as so much char. Bad form all around.
