I actually think that in S1 not even Rodney himself knew what he was capable of. I think he didn't know himself particularly well back then.

Oh, I think he knew himself very well -- before he went to Atlantis. Then, like so many others in the expedition, he found he'd come home. That makes a difference in a person.

It was just that much more obvious in McKay because he'd never learned to put other people first, to work toward the common good, to be team. He still struggles with it because his first impulse is always for himself, but he's learned to overcome his fear and let the courage shine through.
