Yep! Them's the politics of command.

I'd like to think, had Sumner lived, he and Sheppard would have ended up working well together, if not becoming BFFs. Sheppard's "leave no one behind" would have appealed very much to Sumner as a Marine, and Sumner's honor and sense of duty would have restored Sheppard's faith in the chain of command. But that's for an AU. (And there's more than a few of them out there. \o/)

Hope you don't mind my piling on, but I have to say I really agree with this reading of their relationship. Sumner gets slammed a lot and I think it's unfortunate because his character was more complex than that. He stepped back when John started talking to Teyla, for instance.

I'd love to see that AU, personally! :D

Aww. I watched Pilot last week and that part where John, Rodney, Elizabeth, and Sumner went over to the window to look out -- I thought that was kind of a little of what it would've been like had Sumner lived. He would've recognized John's abilities and John would've begun to respect Sumner as a leader (like he respected Elizabeth). Of course, it goes against my natural inclinations for John to be second in the chain of command. A funny consequence to Sumner's survival that crops up in my mind, though (as the McKay/Sheppard shipper I am), is that if Liz was #1, Sumner #2, Rodney would be #3 and technically outrank John. Interesting.

Hmmm. Some of the AU fics address that chain of command and others have Sheppard outside the chain, acting as liaison between the military and science. It's an interesting concept to explore.

Depends on how you see the military and the way it functions. They don't have to like each other to work well together. They just have to make it work. The best part of fanfic is all those wonderful interpretations and all the possibilities. (Go, writers!)
