Okay, I'm not supposed to be here. (Don't ask.) But I was thinking (hush!) and one of the characters I would liked to have seen more often was Lorne. Yes, he got off to a rough start with McKay -- I think that's understandable given that Rodney takes some getting used to -- but he became a very integral part of Atlantis very quickly. He's smart, professional, sweet, and deadly; quite a combination!

I think the writer who has the best version of Canon Lorne is [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine. Her stories are gen, focus on the military side of the expedition for the most part, and Lorne in particular. His views on Sheppard, the command staff, the absurdities of military life, and paperwork are fun to read. If you'd like to read more, you can find [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine's stories here. I recommend The Jenny Code but must warn you that it's dark in some ways, and includes graphic violence.

So, what do you like or dislike about Evan Lorne? Who was he off-duty? On Earth? Personally, I think he smuggled in tubes of paint with the C4 and canvases in boxes marked as "targets." :)

What secondary character do you wish had had more screen time? More backstory? Feel free to open up a separate post for each character, and speculate on who that person was when the cameras weren't rolling. Zelenka? Chuck Campbell? Marie Cho? Amelia Banks? Who am I missing?

Ooops! Gotta go!

Hah! I was thinking along the same lines this morning (especially with the secondary characters) and I was going to suggest Woolsey. But Lorne is much more interesting.

Especially the sleepwalking thing! How'd he get past the medical to get sent to Atlantis?

I have to give this more thought, but I love Lorne. I think he makes a great 2IC and compliments Sheppard's command style nicely. I love that he paints (I read a story by Icarus where he was a photographer as well, can totally buy that).

I just realized that Lorne might be my fandom bicycle as well. I mean, I can see him with Parrish (though we have so little Parrish to go on) but I can also see him with Teyla, occasionally with John (okay, not the same John that I see with Rodney, if you know what I mean) and I can even picture him with Keller. Hmmm. Gotta give this some more thought here...

I love writing Lorne, usually in his role as support to Sheppard. I've included him in several stories, especially when Sheppard is missing or hurt. I'm more of an action, military, writer as well. I love this character, he's strong, funny, smart, a great complement to Sheppard. I remember him from the original episode of SG-1 that he did; he stood out in that episode as well.

I would love to have seen more of Radek, although I realize more of Radek could have interfered with McKay's screen time but I really love the character of Dr. Zelenka. I also regret that Teldy and Sgt Mehra were introduced so late in the series. I would really love to have seen Teldy have more screen time. I like writing her as well; she's one tough Marine.

We needed more seasons!!!!!!!

Lorne is a great character, and I would have liked to learned more about him. Cadman is another one I'd like to have seen pop in now and again. I wouldn't have minded seeing Jeannie again, I loved her with Rodney. There are so many! I'm gonna have to think this through :)

Hi not!mischief5 ! *waves*

I love Lorne! He's bright, laid-back in an entirely different manner compared to John's laid-back, and a nice compliment to him in the command chain. He's very dryly snarky and he takes his job seriously.

My personal fanon about him is that he was raised in a hippy artist's commune by his mother after his father divorced her to go 'find himself'. She's not pleased that he went into the military, but he convinced her that he truly does like his job, so she accepts it. He's also fairly crafty and, if need be, can knit his own socks. A lot of his mother's friends are gay, and he thinks the military's obsession with its soldiers love lives is simply ridiculous.

I want more Chuck! Who is this Canadian dude who runs gate operations? He could be awesome!

Lorne is a fantastic character, and really deserved more screen time IMHO. That he's kinda damn sexy hot doesn't hurt, really.

I love miss_porcupine's stories in general, but I agree, her Lorne is one standout character the way she writes him. The way she shows Rodney and Sheppard and the whole Atlantean crew from his perspective is fantastic.

Personally I can imagine Lorne with everyone BUT John - the whole chain of command thing bothers me, so. HOnestly I'd love to see more Lorne/Rodney fic, not because I don't love John/Rodney, but because I think someone as level-headed as Lorne would be good for Rodney and it would be one long, convoluted and strange courtship, especially with straight-but-protective John hovering about and...

Damnit. You people need to stop with the plot bunnies. *lobs back into pit*

I can't think of a single thing about Lorne that I dislike. He's got that wry sense of humor, that long-suffering military calm about him. I loved him in The Game! The look on his face when he panned in on Rodney's banner - the way he and Radek became engaged in the world-building! I could ship him with Radek, I really, really could. He's just so darn cute! His little scene with Parrish at the beginning of Runner? He was so indulgent! Loved that!

And also? Very heroic. Very. That part in Coup d'Etat, where John holds up Lorne's dog tags? I was pretty sure the character wasn't dead, but it still gave me shivers of dread.

It would have been wonderful to see a 'day-in-the-life' episode from his point of view, too. I really wish they had done a few of those in canon. Was it Sunday when he was painting? I'll bet he'd be a ton of fun to hang out with, off duty. :o)

Who else? Hmmmm - it would have been nice to see more of the other scientists.

Oops - thundering like crazy, and the lights just browned out - gotta go...

Speaking of Lorne...I just watched this for the first time today, and it is awesomesauce! Rockstar, by chayiana.

I love how it looks as though the Wraith is saying part of the lyrics - how they did that, I have no idea, but it is so cool.

Huh. I don't have a Lorne icon. Woe.

I SO want more Lorne. It's one of my pet peeves with SGA - why, oh why, did they bother to introduce him and then didn't USE him?
He's pretty. The eyes! He's cool and have that dry, longsuffering attitude towards the geeks, and he's Sheppards SECOND. He's the XO, they could have a really great relationship, and they'd likely complement eachothers command styles as well. Sheppard is portrayed as a bit easy-going, lax with the protocol and the lesser rules, but die-hard on keeping his people safe. And Lorne strikes me as methodical, organized, the kind who works through everything in the proper order. And together they would pretty much save the day, and they would have to be friends, working so close together.
How would Lorne react to Caldwells attempts to take over the city command while John was a bug? Lorne was second in command and should be calling the shots while his commander and friend was changing and he even had to send the marines to hunt him - still, we get nothing of that.

Could someone pleeeease write me a nice bug!John fic from Lornes pow??

It would make a good post. *nods firmly*

I don't think in terms of fandom bicycles usually, though. I think in terms of OTP and pairs that I can realistically envision. Unfortunately my OTP McShep goggles are on a little too tight for me to see other pairings with those characters easily. I can, but they have to be presented right and I have to *believe* it. That usually means that the characterization has to be stellar--if it is off just the slightest, my inclination not to believe the pairing in the first place takes over. *embarrassed grin*

Completely with you there. The only story where it sorta worked for me was one where I thought John bordered on batshit insane and Lorne seemed slightly out of his depth on how to handle the possible attraction.

I want more of all the secondary characters!
Parrish would be especially lovely but then again you know I'm that kind of girl.

I definitely would have loved more Lorne, but on the other hand there's so much that can be done with him because we don't have all the details. I like to think that despite his few years at the SGC he never quite learned to play by the book, and was recommended by General O'Neill because he was a great match for Sheppard.

I tend to put him with Parrish because the pairing is so much fun...and I have promised myself to create more of a backstory for David because I tend to make him obsessed with plants since that's all we got to see on the show.

The one thing we never saw was an episode like "the Other Guys" with mostly secondary characters as the focus. An entire Lorne episode would have been awesome. Of course, that's what fanfic is for...

I'd have liked to see ANY other scientists in the field--marine biologists, linguists, archaeologists, anthropologists (as long as they didn't get killed in the episode)!

:) Parrish surely wins for most fanfic v. least amount of screen time!

OMG, Lorne. On my top ten of Sci-Fi Hunks I'd Gladly Shag. But ladies, he took a hit. A lot of my flist were hating on him. I love that he was a nartist and that he ends up running the SGC and lets Rodney go back to Pegasus even though he knows it will alter his own timeline. A hero. I am mulling a story over where he will be integral to the blossoming of a McShep love story. I love when he is paired with Parrish but really, he would be awesome with Jennifer or Ronon. (read a fic about Carson's funeral that had him paired with Ronon and I thought it was a great choice.) Kavan Smihth was great in the few moments he had as a focus on the show. They could have made more of him.

Another secondary character they coul dhave given so much more to us of was Zelenka. I love stories where he's a sex god who eventually gets the babe: Miko, Weir, Carson, Jennifer...or, hmmm, Lorne?
