I'm fine with it, but I have a suggestion. Maybe instead of or in addition to a slash poll, we could do a slash discussion and/or shipping discussion? Because I'd love to see a rewatch that takes note of, not just the McKay/Sheppard slashiness, but also the subtext between Rodney/Radek, John/Ronon, Carson/Rodney, Elizabeth/Teyla, etc. And I'd be on board with seeing the John/Teyla, Elizabeth/Rodney, Aiden/Teyla, Elizabeth/John, etc. subtext noted too.

Oh, I was definitely hoping that a shipping discussion could be a part of the rewatch posts. I love Sheppard/McKay, but also saw Ronan/McKay, Sheppard/Ronan, Carson/McKay, etc. I also can see my first het pairing, but I can't remember the girl's name. She was the Captain of that alien ship that Sheppard kept clashing with...and losing to. *g*

As much as I love my McShep, I have to agree with almostnever, there are many other relationships (gen, het or slash) that could be talked about.

How about making it a relationship discussion instead of a poll ? :)

I was hoping that all kinds of relationships would be part of the rewatch discussion. It's one of the things I wanted to squee about, because I saw so many through the course of the show - there was the canon het, at well as subtext het, slash, and femslash. I've never seen a show with so many possibilities. Being new to the fandom, I didn't know how slashy the fanbase was, or this comm in particular, hence the above poll. I wanted to get a better feel. I'm a slash fan at heart, but don't want to exclude others, but didn't want to not do something if the het/femslash base wasn't there. However, it is, so I'll keep the initial post more general, and people can squee about whatever they want in the comments.

I was thinking, mm, maybe add a 'ship poll as well... and a team moments poll... and an ooh, supporting character! poll... and realized that was getting out of hand.

Maybe have a poll for Awesome Relationship Moments? Or have comment threads for Slash, Ship, and Gen Relationships? (though that's slippery... where someone might see a totally romantic interlude between Teyla and Kate, someone else might see best friends)

Yeah, there are so many possibilities with this show - one of the many reasons I love it so much. I'll probably do away with the poll idea; I got it off another comm doing a rewatch, but that comm was dedicated to one slash pair, and this comm isn't. Being so new, I just didn't know what the leanings were. They are definitely slash, but there are many others as well, and I don't want anyone to feel excluded.

To make a slash poll at the exclusion of everything else isn't fair on those who see no subtext at all or who like het/gen. A shipping discussion would be better as per the above comments, but I've already resigned myself to the fact that SGA is a dominantly slash fandom and majority rules.

How would everyone else feel with a het or McKay/Keller squee post? That's why I've never posted one because I know a lot of people wouldn't like it.

Now that the SGA canon is closed and the fandom has gotten smaller, you should write whatever squee post you like :).

I'm not saying I will comment on every single squee posts, but you shouldn't feel you can't make that post because the "majority" doesn't seem to like the same things. Maybe some of the usually silent minority would be really happy to know they are not alone ^_^.
Also some people like more than one pairing, both het and slash, you never know.

In any case, I'm pretty sure that anyone trying to troll you over a squee post would be kicked out faster than they can imagine by the mods/maintainer. So don't let that fear stop you, we'll protect our fellow SGA fan from trolls ;).


PS : just for info, I'm not into McKay/Keller, and I really don't mind if you make a post about them, the more the merrier, really! ^_^

There's been lots of different types of squee here, not just shipping squee. Nothing is stopping a het or gen post - it's not like this is the sort of com that excludes all reference to some sexualities.

That's why I'm doing the poll, to figure out what people's preferences are. Majority does rule in most cases, but I want this rewatch to be as all-inclusive as it can be. Being so new to the fandom, I just didn't know what people's leanings were, and thought the poll would be a good way to find out. Based on the poll results so far, slash is definitely in the majority, but it isn't everyone. So, I'll probably not do the poll, and just leave it to people to squee in the comments about their favorite relationships in that ep.

As to Keller, I liked her. She was real, and fun. McKay/Keller may not be my ship of choice, but I'd say post about them. I'd be cool to know what you thought were their most awesome moments. Or, you can do it on the rewatch posts

I also need to add to my comment above that I have issue with the wording of this poll. The options should be yes, no or don't know. There's nothing in any way 'offensive' about slash, it's just not something I like to read ;)

I am the lone 'offended' vote, only because I'm so tired of the focus of every comm devolving into slash. I have no problem, nor am I offended, with slash or porn, but I choose to enjoy these characters as they were written in cannon, not the innuendo that fans try to apply to every glance and every action.

I don't read slash about these characters and I don't choose to discuss slash about these characters. I try to be accommodating for those who do, but I'd don't. And for people who don't, then this structure of re-watch where there is so much squee about slash is not enjoyable. And you are right, slash is the majority, and majority rules. The fact that slash is popular is a very interesting statement of fandom in itself. I'm not sure what people are actually a fan of when slash rules. To me, it is less about the story and the genre.

I hope you all have fun watching, but please understand why I won't join you. I am not criticizing any of your interests in engaging in what you enjoy. I only want you to know that this is a subject that some of us don't find entertaining.

I just changed my vote back to 'offended.' But as I said above - it's the only option for those who don't like slash or don't want to see slash squee at the exclusion of everything else. I'm not against it or offended by its existence (to each their own), it's just not my thing.

I get it. I didn't see slash in anything until I discovered fandom. It never even occurred to me, unless it was a show with a canon slash relationship such as Oz or Torchwood.

You weren't the only dissenting vote, and I don't plan on including a poll because I want this to be as inclusive as I can. I don't know what the discussions will be like, as I haven't actively participated in anything like this, let alone run it, but you are probably correct in thinking that much of the squee will be slash in nature. Hopefully not all, as I actually do enjoy the het pairings both canon and subtext that are part of the show.

Maybe you'll stick your head in once and a while to see if they are something you could enjoy.

Your icon is from one of the last episodes, right? The AU one where John was a detective? That was a great episode. I liked the switched around roles.

I thank you very much for considering the fact that others may not be into slash. As I said, I have no issue with slash, but I don't enjoy it in this fandom. So, I appreciate your thoughts. I really don't want anyone to think that I am passing judgement, I'm not, I'm no prude but it gets very frustrating when there are so few avenues for canon purists to enjoy the show. So, thanks...and when I can, I will check in with the re-watches.

To answer your question about the icon, yes, that is from Vegas, the AU episode. Quickly became a favorite of mine, yeah...Sheppard looked so hot.

I'm the same way with the original Star Trek show. I don't see the slash, I never will see it. To me Kirk and Spock are family, brothers. I can't tell you what a shock it was a few years ago to discover that this term 'slash' I'd seen on the internet came about because of those two. Ah well. To each their own.

What I'm thinking of doing right now, and I don't know how it will be received or how it'll go, is to have threads on each rewatch post. I'm thinking of a best/worst moments thread, a favorite lines thread, a slash/femslash thread, a het thead, and just a genreal squee thread. The point being, to contain some of the relationship squee to make the rewatch more enjoyable, and to make it easier for people to find what they want.

Flexibility is the name of the game here - if we do the whole show it'll take two years, so I'll adjust as I go, as I see what works/doesn't work. Hopefully, people will stick with me as I figure it out.

I voted for slash by default, and will certainly leave my vote there but seeing the discussion, maybe you do want a more 'gen' approach to be inclusive... then you can ask about 'relationship moments' and I suspect there will be things I didn't see because I had my McShep goggles on and need to have it pointed out.

I guess I'm trying to be inclusive essentially because the fandom is getting smaller and don't want to lose folk who may not want to talk/do slash... anyone should be welcome...

I'm going to go with a more gen approach, so it can be more inclusive. I have the feeling that much of the discussion will be slash in nature, but hopefully there will be a lot of other conversation going on as well. I have no desire to make anyone feel excluded, but I did want to check and see what preferences were out there. I didn't want to not do something because I assumed there was a het/femslash/gen base out there.

While I'm not actually offended, like others have noted, this isn't really a slash fandom for me (or het, for that matter) and if things turn into a McShep or other ship fest, I'm not going to find a lot to engage with :/

I'm really glad to hear you're taking a more gen approach! I love SGA and this fandom, but as someone who regularly takes an interest in all things under or unloved, that can be hard enough in a smaller fandoms. Thanks for being inclusive :)

Yeah, offended was a bad choice of words, but then the poll was a bad idea to begin with. Ah well. I had good discussion with people, and learned so much more about the fandom that I didn't know.

I'm all about inclusion, so I'm not sure why I did the poll - it's what I get for making a decision about something right before bed. Hopefully, I didn't turn people off of the rewatch. I'm watching the Pilot right now. It's been fun watching it, imagining that there might be a few others out there, watching it at the same time as I am.

I hope you'll poke your nose in once in a while and check out what people are saying.

Good timing; I was just checking my email one more time before bed. *g* Squee is definitely the name of the game. I only wish I could have found someone to watch it in real time, but it's probably for the best I didn't. I get interrupted all the time with things when watching TV.

The mod on this comm is allowing me to use this space fore the rewatch. So, every Friday at approximately 10 PM my time (USA's EST), I make a post that contains the synopsis of that week's episode, and people are free to leave their comments when ever they please, in what ever form they please (I favor a more 'stream of consciousness' type, but some people might just make one big post).

I'm glad we'll see you there.
