Richard Woolsey Squee!
Jan. 14th, 2011 10:27 pmRecently, I've really taken to Richard Woolsey. When they first brought him on the show I remember thinking WTF? First they kill off Elizabeth and then they replace Sam with a stuffy bureaucrat?
But the more I watch S5, the more I like him. Or I just got older and wiser :-D He's cool. Stuffy and a little awkward until they put him in his element as a negotiator and a lawyer. And dramaturgically he works much better than Sam ever did (and I love Sam, I really do!).
I love fics where Woolsey is actually liked and respected by the rest of the command staff. He's cool. And Picardo does a great job acting.
So, a tiny squee for Woolsey!!

Date: 2011-01-14 09:46 pm (UTC)As much as I dreaded Sam Carter joining the show, I was genuinely sad at the end of S4. Like you, I thought... Woolsey?? But I changed my mind very quickly - by The Seed, I was welcoming Woolsey to Pegasus just as John did. It may be Picardo's acting (which is great) but I think Woolsey the character had a wicked sense of humor and made a wonderful progression in losing some of the stiffness he'd shown earlier. I also like fic where there's a true Woolsey characterization and the Team accepts him, quirkiness notwithstanding.

Date: 2011-01-14 10:04 pm (UTC)While I don't think I would have ever WILLINGLY traded in Elizabeth (or Sam, for that matter) for him, he picked up the reins and did a great job.
And I admit, I really would love to see Woolsey/Teyla fic (that isn't crack), working up some of that mutual negotiator respect while kicking a bit of the may/december thing. Woolsey deserves a classy lady like Teyla! And admit it, he would spoil Torren rotten.

Date: 2011-01-14 10:23 pm (UTC)I wasn't sure my mind could go here but... now you've got me thinking about this! Woolsey would definitely spoil Torren and he'd treat Teyla like the lady she is. Oh my... thank you for this, I need to go make some notes. ;)

Date: 2011-01-14 10:14 pm (UTC)He was a good Commander for the City, and as sad as I was to se Sam go, (and I admit it, a bit wft!? about Woolsey coming in to replace her), he did a very good job in an uneasy situation :).

Date: 2011-01-14 10:22 pm (UTC)I could never get the SGC's reason for Sam becoming boss of John and Rodney (et al) because she was both military and a scientist. Sorta, kinda throws the whole "civilian-led" expedition out the window. [But, as TPTB gave Amanda the bridge between SG-1 and Sanctuary she'd requested, she got the part.]
I always had the impression that we were supposed to make fun of Woolsey's character at the beginning: sloped-shouldered, finicky, bureaucratic, yadda, yadda. Also can't get out of a conference room (snorfle) and gets stuck baby-sitting. Then, when we learned that he could be a wily fox, things about him changed. The costume dept. began to put shoulder pads into his uniform so that he had a more confident appearance. Really. Take a closer look.
Of course, I wish (yeah ... if wishes were horses, I'd have a riding stable or three) that we could have seen him grow through successive seasons. I think he would have loved to have been the grandfather that Torren John would never know. [And, yes, I'm tearing up.]
Anyway, thank you for posting your SQUEE.
You get my squee, too.

Date: 2011-01-14 11:05 pm (UTC)I loved Woolsey coming on board, at first for the possible conflict that Sheppard and McKay would have with him. Then then simply because the writers allowed him to become a strong, exceptional leader who understood what had to be done might not always be by the book.
I always like the Woolsey character, not certain if it was because of the ST:Voyager Doctor or just Picardo is so wonderful and such a great actor. I'm just glad he became part of canon.
Personally, I loved Sam because she had a understanding for Sheppard and McKay that I'm not sure Elizabeth even did. Weir wasn't military or scientist and Sam was both; I think she was more suited to deal with them. I loved the relationship that she developed with Sheppard, loved it when she kicked Ellis' ass when he spoke to McKay the way he did.
When I write fanfic, I tend to set it after Season 5 because I love writing Woolsey and Sheppard together...developing that trust and respect. Sorry, I don't do slash or shipping...so no sparky between them.
I agree with
A very good squee,

Date: 2011-01-15 12:28 am (UTC)I remember how Woolsey handled Vala's 'approval test' on SG1 -- it was perfectly dorky, handling Vala perfectly.
So, yes... squeeeee!!!!
