Series Rewatch: The Eye

We're back to our weekly rewatch! I hope everyone had an excellent holiday. This week's episode is the conclusion to our mid-season finale: The Eye! The Genii are in control of Atlantis, Elizabeth and Rodney are hostages, and John alone in the fight against the intruders, since Teyla, Ford, and Carson are trapped on the mainland. A pretty intense episode.

Ah, The Eye. God, I love episode tags to this. I think I might have even wrote one myself?

This episode has so many good things: BAMF John being the main one. But soaking wet Rodney is right up there too! I really like the Teyla - Sora fight too. And, of course, there's my all time favourite SGA baddie, Kolya.

However, there are a couple of things I hate in this episode too.
1. Ford. I remember watching some BTS footage and Rainbow was enthusing about how much Ford got to do in this ep (bless him, he was way past due for something to do) and how it was cool to see him step up and lead but.....he's a jackass in this episode. He's so bad at the leadership thing, how was he even picked for the mission as such a senior officer with skills that bad? He's horrible to Carson and I just really dislike him in this episode. I can't tell if I was meant to or not!

2. That little exchange between Rodney and Elizabeth when his plan works. "Did you ever doubt me?" "Yes, multiple times." (Something like that anyway). Seriously? He stepped in front of a gun for you. He stopped you getting killed. He saved the city!!

Solid episode but the best part about is all the lovely fic it inspired!

The Storm/The Eye were the episodes that made me go from enjoying the show to LOVING it. I wish there were way more tags dealing with Rodney's wound and possible guilt over giving in to Kolya - with John comforting him, of course XD

God, BAMF!John was so hot. So was wet!Rodney...*sings* These are a few of my favorite things~

Yeah, Carson in the episode says something along those lines. "Normally you're a sweet lad, but put you in charge and you're a cheeky little bugger." Something to that effect. I DO like Ford, and god, I wish they'd treated him better. I think we're supposed to believe that Ford is so new - fairly fresh out of officer training? - that he's going overboard being commanding.

Elizabeth saying she doubted Rodney, several times, after he'd been tortured and STILL stepped in front of a gun for her, held by the man who had him tortured...wow. It makes me so angry.

Me too! I had loved the Stargate movie, and the first few seasons of Stargate SG-1, but was fading out of it by the time SGA came along. I watched out of brand loyalty more than anything, I guess, and I had really enjoyed Rodney on his SG-1 episodes, so was pleased with that casting. But it was just a show I watched that seemed a little slashy. The Storm/The Eye, and especially how John and Rodney are in it, made me a true fan.

I watched the Stargate movie when I was very young and enjoyed it. I had no idea how important it'd become to me later on LOL Ooo, I had no idea that's how you found your way to the SGA fandom. Have you ever gone back and watched more SG1? I definitely saw the slash potential, which was mostly why I started the show. It was these eps that made me love the show for itself (and The Defiant One before I was fully ONBOARD the McShep train).

I watch the movie first too. Me and my friends even played a role playing game based on travelling though gates. I haven't watched all of SG-1 but I fell in love with SGA. Ok, I fell i love with Rodney lol

Ford is a git in this. I agree that he was over doing the command thing but how the heck did he get to go to Atlantis if he'd never had any sort of command?! It's a pity because Ford needed something to do but then he got this :(

The Storm and The Eye are simply superb and, yes, there is not enough tad fic!!!

I must admit Sora annoys me - or at least what they did with her. Why show her being trained along side the guys but as soon as it comes to the mission she has to be the one who gets the second doubts about the violence etc She's a trained fighter ffs, it's just such a cliché that women are going to be soft as soon as the killing starts.

Other than that these two episodes are just a joy :DDD

Oh man, you guys played a Stargate roleplaying game? That sounds incredibly fun! I'm jealous :D I haven't seen all of SG1 either. I keep meaning to, and I *do* enjoy it, but I don't LOVE any of the characters like I do Rodney and John. And I don't really have a hardcore ship.

Yeah, a lot of people wonder why Ford was chosen for Atlantis. Like, if John hadn't been there to step in, when Sumner died, Ford would have been the one in charge. Why are they so officer light? The SGC KNOWS that nothing goes as planned offworld. Or at least Jack would have known. You'd think he'd know better than to send just a Colonel and lieutenant - with John a last minute addition.

I have no strong feelings about Sora one way or another, though I do wish they could have shown the time she was on Atlantis. Or even mention her later on, once she'd been back with the Genii. What was she doing? Did Ladon demote her when he took over? Maybe she had an obligation to continue the family line and was married off...hmmm.

Yes, it was super fun! I wrote a game for it - my only DM experience - and it was great fun. My gates you could also travel through time lol

RIGHT? The only thing I can think of is the IOA insisted this was a SCIENCE expedition, not a military one, so an officer heavy expedition isn't necessary. We all know the IOA makes dumb decisions.

Like you, I saw the movie first. I'd seen this Rodney McKay character and was tickled to down to my toes that Rodney was going to be on SGA. I'd have watched it for that reason alone.

Ford is wound up and frustrated that it took so long to get back to Atlantis. It shows. And while I would wish he'd handled it better too, I appreciated the contrast between his command style and Sheppard's. (if you can call it a command style). They couldn't be more opposite.

I love that you were a Rodney fan even before SGA :) Most people hate Rodney on SG1.

It might be that if Ford had the benefit of time, he could have grown into someone more patient. Especially if John is the one teaching him how to command. Ford was so young, I feel like all his emotions were on the extreme end, still.

I did rewatch seasons 1 to 6 after SG-1 had ended. I still think seasons 1 to 4 were strong, great episodes, especially the slashiness of Jack and Daniel and the clear philosophical differences between military and science. I can't blame Richard Dean Anderson for wanting to take it easier, but once Jack started fading out as a character, the show got erratic.

Jack is my favorite character, so about the time he starts to appear less, I start to lose interest. I also don't have a hardcore SG1 ship - I like Jack/Daniel, but I don't *mind* Jack/Sam - and I think that lack of intense love means I don't have much interest in fic. I would love to get into SG1 fic, but I haven't found anything that ~grabbed me.

At least we've got seasons 1-4, right?
