Series Rewatch: Childhood's End
Nov. 16th, 2017 02:13 am
This week's episode is Childhood's End! The team visits a planet filled with nothing but children and young adults, and provides an interesting look at how various cultures deal with life under the threat of the wraith. As always, feel free to leave comments and interact with others :)

Keras is an awesome character, I always wondered how things went with him and the other children afterwards.

Date: 2017-11-17 06:29 pm (UTC)Crossroads index says there is a fic called "Nothing More Than Talking, and it is by hoktauri, but I'm not sure if that's the fic I mean. I might be thinking of another fic altogether, it's been a while since I've read any John/Keras :D

John's sense of direction on land is established as leaving something to be desired. ♥
Baffled team is baffled. What do they do with kids that look like they'd happily shoot them with arrows at the drop of a hat.
Full-growns. I was very taken with this reference in a sit up and take notice kind of way. In one word we get a sense of a very different culture. It's our first clue that these 'kids' are more than kids.
And they are. They've grown up fast. Childhood doesn't last long. When are they expected to take on adult duties? We don't get an exact age, but it must be young.
Rodney's escorts are certainly young, and no one says, send someone older in their place. The expectation to grow up fast is necessary.
What a huge relief it must for Casta and Cleya to accompany someone so old, and so assertive and determined that - they're free to actually act like the little kids they are.
Ford and the chocolate. Aw Ford.
Keras and his big, heart eyes for John. Probably it's good thing Rodney wasn't around most of the time to see that.
Teyla doesn't have a lot to do in this episode. She has John's back, however, and a P-90 she'll use if she has to.
I'm very very glad they didn't try to put her in the 'mommy' role.
Kids? Let the little woman deal with them. Thank you, writers, for not going in that direction even a little bit.
Elizabeth gets a nice role in this. She makes Rodney think about consequences. If I may scratch under the surface? She makes Rodney think and while he may not like it at the time, he respects her for it. He does indeed think about what she says, and then comes up with answers.
This episode gave us a nice balance of fun and serious. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it the first time around.

Date: 2017-11-23 12:31 am (UTC)+ "I'm sorry, yes. Energy field good." So much snark *grins* The sass is strong with this one.
+ The energy field took out a jumper. It's kind of a surprise the Wraith never attempted to copy and utilize this field in taking out the Ancients.
+ Rodney in a thigh holster. The nice thing about the scientific uniforms in season one is how well they provide contrast for the black holsters ;)
+ Rodney doesn't even attempt to get his weapon out when the kids pop out with weapons. Our baby grows so much in this show <3
+ The people of this planet live in the trees. It's perfect for young people, but I imagine getting up and down those ladders once you get older would be a pain in the ass. I wonder if this means, now that they can live past 25, they'll end up moving to live on the ground?
+ "The Well". Of course they'd have their own name for the Stargate. I love that.
+ I can see why Keras is so taken with John. He's so hot *sighs* Rodney's eyes are SO BLUE in this episode, too. They are the perfect first contact team: they're all hot. What a good first impression they make *grins*
+ LOL Rodney with children. I really love that this is the start of the fandom trope where kids gravitate toward Rodney. There's another episode where a kid is bothering Rodney while his team looks on.
+ I like how Elizabeth handles Rodney.
+ Keras: Please watch me kill myself. It'll be romantic!
+ John: I just think you're a little cranky. A LITTLE? It's a good thing people don't visit this planet for trade; Ares attitude is awful lol.
+ I don't think we ever see a Wraith probe again.
+ Aww, John takes a moment to ask if Rodney's okay <3
+ I really like that they mention this planet several times after this episode, even if we don't get to see any of the characters again. I'm glad they form an alliance :)
