Okay, I've gotta start with what struck me the very first time I watched this and still gives me tingles every time since.

(And I'm sure I'll add more later, but this is just to start)

The fact that Jinto and Wex argue over who gets to be Major Sheppard.

That just gets to me every time.

Not just because yes, my reaction to SGA is 'I wanna be Major Sheppard, too!' But also what it says about the impact he's had on them. And the potential dad!John feels and I could go on.

But I'll come back later to squee over just everything else in this awesome episode. Cos there is so much!

Totally cute.
I think I squealed out loud in happiness when I first saw it. I'm a sucker for fluff.

Oh yes.

And John trying to tell them scary stories is just adorable.

I think in his own way he's proud of them looking up to him even as he doesn't know quite what to do with it.

But all his interactions with the Athosian kids just melt me.

This will always to me be the episode when the whole McShep thing clicked :) Though I seriously hate how the writers make fun of Rodney and make him seem like a whiny coward, I do love how he gets to redeem himself later and show how brave he can be.

And how could I not love the interaction between John and Rodney in the scene where John pushes Rodney off the balcony! :D But what really did it for me, was John's reaction to seeing Rodney had put on the shield and sneaked off to walk into the darkness. Even if it was round two of watching SGA for me, it was like seeing something for the first time, and I was like 'wow, how did I not see this before!' :D

But I also really liked how they discovered the transporters, how they were interacting with the Athosians (John telling the kids scary stories! XD), and learning a bit about the Ancients too. (I always suspected they weren't all as benevolent and nice as you thought at first, keeping a creature locked up for studies like that, and later episodes confirmed that belief...)

Also, the kids playing around Atlantis reminded me again of what intrigued me in 'Rising too': how the kids can make a game of something that's a hugely scary part of their life. I know the Wraith have been mostly dormant during their lifetime, but I'm sure they're well aware of the threat they might face in the future. Yet they play using a Wraith mask. And I love how the game gets transformed after meeting the Earth people, and how being Sheppard becomes something to debate over :D

Throughout the series, I loved little bits like that which show how the people in Pegasus galaxy had learned to cope with living alongside the Wraith. Wish there had been even more of those!

This was the episode where I saw the McShep too.

Telling Elizabeth, "That's not all we did." Made me sit up and wonder - exactly what else did the two of you do?

Even without the slash goggles, I love that we see them playing together like overgrown boys. It sets the pattern for the rest of the series. They're frinds

You couldn't have torn me away from watching the series at that point.

And then, despite the scared man we see earlier, brave little toaster Rodney saves the day. ;;;more flails;;;

Yes, yes and Yes!

This episode has this iconic scenes that just ... define... The whole John and Rodney dynamic for me.

And, for some reason I adore men acting like little kids so that just draws me in each time.

I think my very favourite scene is John's face when he agrees that he shot Rodney in the leg. That smirk. That self-satsified, little boy, look at me, aren't I cool look, combined with the sheet glee he shows at the very idea. There's something about it that makes me melt every time.
(And fall in love with him a little bit, before quickly deciding that if Rodney's the one to make him smile like that, he should get Rodney)

And, much as I love science fiction and that plays a huge part in why i like the show, I adore team shows and shows with friendship and the whole John and Rodney friendship just seals the deal for me in this episode.

I also think it's really important that Rodney gets to save the day at the end.
Much as I thought they were making too much of making him out to be a coward, etc (because really, whobwouldnt be subconsciously if not consciously scared in that situation), I thought it was really telling that, in only the second story of the show, he gets to save the day.
It sets up a pattern of behaviour for Rodney that I think forms an intrinsic part of his character - when it's not necessary, he will whine and complain and seek to push the task off on someone else.
But as soon as stuff gets real and people are in danger - Rodney will risk his life to do whatever it takes to save them.

The whole wraith game playing thing is such an awesome piece of sci fi story - because that's how things are. That is how people deal with things, and I'd also loved to have seen more of it.

But you also have to figure, their version of hide and seek, with one person playing a Wraith, probably teaches valuable life lessons too. How to hide, go unnoticed....

That is so true, what a great point! And I bet it would work better than to just teach them to be scared of the Wraith, it shows them ways to take action instead of freezing with fear.

"Any side effects?"
"Dry mouth, headache the irresistible urge to run on a small wheel..."

"Did you see that?"..."Invulnerable!"

"Ever see a 20 kiloton nuclear explosion?" "I have" "Not from up close!"

I do love that John has already made such an impression on the kids as was discussed in the other comments.

"Faint is the proper medical term."

Transporters for the win!

Hmm, they WERE kind of mean to Rodney about the shield.

"Size doesn't matter." "That's a myth."
Of course they were talking about the size of the containment container...

Brave little toaster Rodney!

John still calling him McKay but Elizabeth calls him Rodney right before he walks into the darkness then she calls him McKay when he's on the floor, unconscious.

Some odd camera shots in this episode.

There was some discussion on Tumblr, maybe? about this. I have a vague memory of someone saying which ep it was. But of course, I can't remember.

I love how you capture them here.

And of course John moved a dead plant to cover the hole in the wall ;)

"I like the way you think"

Ok, I have to add to this...

Every time I see this episode, I can't help but think that there should be a fic out there where they run with the idea that Rodney needs to convince his subconscious that he needs to release the shield...
Which of course would be done by John *convincing* him. Which I imagine would end up rather smutty.

But yes. That's where my mind goes. Every time.
