Series Rewatch: Rising, Parts 1 & 2

We're starting from the beginning, folks. Rising, episodes 01 & 02. Lets remember why we love this show so much and share it with our fellow fans!

Jumping in to say, not only do I have a strong personal bias against the over-used love triangle trope, but I just didn't understand it in SGA.
I felt that both the Rodney and Ronon storylines with Keller came out of nowhere. I just didn't feel they were done well. And despite them trying to make it one, it never really felt like a love triangle to me.
But then I'm always most critical of the shows I like the most.

I think they got Jewel Staite on there and they went, "OH BOY. A pretty girl who is super smart, totally someone we can hook our favorite geek up with." Even if they had zero chemistry and it made no sense. I also think the love triangle was TPTB's way of making Rodney look cooler - look, he was chosen over the super hot, athletic badass!

Which I think is part of why I never believed it - it was driven by their perceived ideas of what should happen when a hot female arrives, rather than by the characters.
I am all for character driven developments.

(And my lil slasher heart says that Rodney should be the one getting with the hot, athletic, badass colonel...)

Also, despite it being barely touched upon, I thought the Ronon and Amelia relationship was a much smarter, character-driven and healthier one.

*nod* If it makes sense for the character, I can at least tolerate it. But watching Rodney and Jennifer was just painful, in my opinion.

(Rodney should totally be getting with the hot, badass colonel)

I did like the little hints of Ronon/Amelia we got. They initially bond over fighting - Amelia kickboxes, and Ronon is suitably impressed. It felt like a better foundation for a relationship. Jennifer and Ronon did have good chemistry, but at one point Keller reacts negatively to Ronon dealing with some bad guys - who were a very present, active threat to their lives. Oh, Keller.

I was also a bit worried by the Keller and Ronon's previous lover comparisons that they seemed to be aiming at.

It's much healthier for him to be attracted to someone who isn't 'just like' the woman he lost.

It didn't make sense. By the time Keller came along our team was a family - ready to put, and had put, their lives on the line for each other.

No contrived love triangle was going to stand up to that.
