It never occurred to me until the other day to question - who exactly is the defiant one in this episode?

The Wraith for being a persnickety bastard and staying alive after all those years?

John Sheppard for defying the odds and defeating the Wraith?

Rodney for defying his past and embracing his new bravery?

Or Brendan Gall for defying what everyone expected of him? Was his last action despair or defiance?

I love that this show can still give me things to think about.

(my current vote is on Gall)

I've always tended to think it's John, primarily because defiance is a pretty strong character trait of his. But I think the interpretation is pretty open and could really be any/all of them.

The Wraith agrees with me though. ;) "I will savour the taste of your defiance."

I always thought it referred to the wraith, who had overcome such odds to survive 10,000 years. But I really like that the title is ambiguous, because it could refer to anyone!

Neither action defies their inherent nature. To find that you have to look at the scientists. And that led to a very happy afternoon of pondering.
*settles in for a happy afternoon*

Hmmm, I wonder if they deliberately made it ambiguous? Crafty writers. Never noticed that before!
