Writing Thread
Nov. 14th, 2014 06:57 pmConsidering it's The Month of Nano, I just wanted to remind everyone that this comm has a writing tag. If you'd like to discuss an SGA story you're working on, character development, season details, etc, please feel free to do so.

Date: 2014-11-15 06:16 pm (UTC)We need these kinds of stories to keep going. I look forward to reading it when it's done. *g*
You'll get the Secret Santa done too. I have utter confidence in you!

Date: 2014-11-15 09:05 am (UTC)I just don't know how to end my story. I've given them an Ancient device that is incredibly powerful and would be one hell of a deus ex machina for practically everything they would ever encounter. I need a reason that the machine can't be used ever again and I'm drawing a blank.
It's in the city, so it can't be destroyed by angry villagers or the Wraith. It has to be set between Tao of Rodney and Sunday, so it can't be that the device is a huge ZPM drain (since they already practically depleted the ZPM they have in McKay & Mrs. Miller, not to mention that as a deus ex machina the sacrifice would be worth the reward). It can't imprint on the original user, since Rodney would still have access to it.
My brain is always solving problems in the background and I'll have those "Eureka!" moments randomly when I'm not even thinking about it, so a month ago when I got my story concept and had this problem? I wasn't worried about it. Now? I'm freaking out a bit.
I guess I need to be under the threat of impending doom or take a bath or something. :)

Date: 2014-11-20 11:32 pm (UTC)No, I have not solved my problem. As much as John is begging me to just let him "blow the damn thing up", I'm not sure I can realistically get them to that point? At what point do you give up on being able to fix a problem and forever sacrifice the ultimate weapon because it's making life pretty inconvenient right now? It's even harder because John is pretty incapacitated at the moment, so Rodney would have to give up on his own ability to fix it more or less independently. Roles reversed, I think John could reasonably reach that point, but alas - it's a Rodney-centric story.

Date: 2014-11-21 10:42 am (UTC)How about making the machine have a side effect? Something like, when it's used it weakens the fabric of reality, and might have caused the universe to collapse (or some other, similar scifi reasoning). Maybe they just got lucky this time, something Rodney only realises after they've used it. Then they have to lock up or destroy the machine to prevent anyone else making the same mistake?

Date: 2014-11-20 10:09 pm (UTC)Struggling with my SGA Santa fic atm (like a fair few others it seems). I can see it, I just can't write it. I think it needs an author about 300 times better than me to do the idea justice. Tempted to delete it and start over.
How's your's coming along?

Date: 2014-11-21 12:15 am (UTC)No worries on that score. We've all got RL we're trying to balance and some days just don't make it easy to find time to play.
'As for my story, I'm about where you are in the writing process. The idea is sound, and it's about characters I love but man, getting it all together is like digging cement with a straw.
But I have a four day weekend coming up and I'm determined to make progress. (cue hysterical laughter)
