I thought Rachel did a tremendous job with how little she was given to work with most of the time. That's true of all the cast, for that matter, they made us love these characters despite inconsistencies in how they were written, and they gave dimension to what could have been cartoonish roles.
But Teyla in particular. She was often the voice of reason that would be ignored, simply because she was a Pegasus native who came from a simpler culture. In many ways, though, she was like Newt from Aliens. The kid that survived with no weapons or armor when none of the adults made it. :-) In other words, people should have listened to her more often! I'm guilty of under-utilizing her in stories myself. I need to watch that tendency.
I've watched "Missing" last week and you can safely add "dark an determined Teyla" to the list. Whoever has watched that episode can't have been surprised by Teyla's actions in "The Prodigal".
We get lots and lots of wise and diplomatic Teyla in fanfiction but rarely the tough and uncompromising woman who is determined to eliminate a threat, if necessary by killing it.
I also think that patience is not inherent in her character but the result of hard work on her side, probably because she was raised to become the leader of her people.
Remember her reaction to John telling Heightmeyer that she couldn't sleep? Her reaction to the three Satedans at the beginning of "Reunion"?
Actually, I think she's pretty hot-headed but learned to be diplomatic and patient by working hard on it from childhood on because it was necessary for her in order to become the leader of the Athosians.

I completely agree with this assessment and it makes her a far more interesting character for it.
