As a change of pace, lets talk Ancient tech. Oh the trouble it has wrought. Ascension machine anyone?
Misuse of technology, abandoned technology, acquiring technology -- technology gone very, very wrong. Suffice to say, many, many stories on the show and in fanfic centered around this subject.
Just how many times did John Sheppard touch something he shouldn't have, anyway?
The scale the Ancients worked with always delights me. They thought big. A city that flys. A gate network that spans two galaxies, if not more. Pretty warships and ZPMs.
Do you have a favorite - in canon or fanon? I'm a sci-fi geek so I reveled in it. If it had to do with travel, from the Gate system to transporters to puddlejumpers, it caught my eye.
Wraith tech! I almost forgot to mention it. eep. Let's celebrate some sci-fi!
Pairings post is here

Date: 2014-07-10 01:20 pm (UTC)In fanon, I absolutely ADORE stories where John communicates with Atlantis itself. In canon, I must admit the sound of The Daedalus in hyperspace is a favorite :D (I'm not sure if it should make a just sound, though...LOL )

Date: 2014-07-10 07:56 pm (UTC)John touching tech is always a favourite :P But I think I was most intrigued by the control chair, and the image of John flying the whole City O_O Also the whole ATA gene in general, and all the cool things you could do with it :)
Wraith tech usually gives me the creeps, it looks a bit icky *shudders*
And of course I also always loved when Rodney got to show his stuff and dig into the innards of some machinery to fix things and save everyone :P

Date: 2014-07-10 10:44 pm (UTC)I think in one of the other posts someone was talking about how Wraith are a very organic, physical evil: their ships are grown from people and are 'alive', they are very body-conscious (used to showing their bodies as a threat and intimidation), and they kill in a hands-on way. In contrast, the Ancients are ultimately removed from the evils they cause: they Ascend to escape the Wraith, they invent things like the device that blows up Wraith ships and stargates on populated words, and they are presented as wafting around in white in a sterile environment. And then we have the humans caught in the middle.
I think maybe my favorite technologies deal with consciousness and identity. Replicators with transferred memories that think they're real. Replicators who want to Ascend. Michael's hybrids, whose original personalities were over-written, making them have the personalities and skills of Wraith. Virtual realities. Clones!

Date: 2014-07-11 02:23 am (UTC)But then how do we explain the exploding tumors?? Because that's very organic, and kind of un-Ancienty. Or maybe they evolved from that? After realizing the kinds of messes they were making by that kind of experimentation?

Date: 2014-07-11 04:02 am (UTC)I think I was going somewhere with this but I creeped myself out.
My favorite tech is the tiniest: the LSD, because it's like superman's x-ray vision in a box. (I have a thing about vision, so I'm a little jealous of having even *better* than human vision.) Sure, John is a bad-ass, but he had a really unfair advantage over the Genii having the home turf *and* the LSD at hand in The Storm/Eye.

Date: 2014-07-10 11:16 pm (UTC)I enjoy AU both in fics and show. So any tech that "magically" allows a character from another universe to come to Atlantis and give a hint of other possibilities (or relationships) is great. And if a character has died in the other universe so there's lots of angst, even better!

Date: 2014-07-24 11:02 pm (UTC)* Atlantis -- a city bobbing on an ocean, which had been sitting on the ocean's floor for thousands of years, and it flies like a spaceship -- what's not to like? The batteries perhaps, they are hard to come by.
* puddlejumper -- cutest word ever for the coolest ship ever, except when it gets stuck inside an open wormhole, then all coolness is gone
* wraith stunner -- I own two replica's and they are just so organic, much like the ships and the tech
* stargate -- it floats in space, or stands majestically on planets, and it's the reason we're on Atlantis exploring, without it Atlantis could never have been possible (the show, I mean)

Date: 2014-07-26 12:54 am (UTC)Oh, hang on... one of the stunners was made my Pharaoh Hamenthotep from Gateworld, and she has a deviantart account --> replica stunner (http://pharaoh-hamenthotep.deviantart.com/art/Wraith-Stunner-with-dark-colours-372329004?q=gallery%3APharaoh-Hamenthotep%2F43722211&qo=5)
