Part of my horoscope for this week reads:

... "My family would be supportive, -- "if I
said I wanted to be a Martian, wear only banana skins, make love to
ashtrays, and eat tree bark." ...
... Redefine what"community" means to you.

I immediately thought of all of you. You never blinked an eye at Blowjob Friday, or when paired with my brain twin, [livejournal.com profile] neevebrody we launched [livejournal.com profile] brendan_vincent, or my current endeavor - hosting [livejournal.com profile] romancingmcshep

You kindly ignored my failures and supported this comm, created with [livejournal.com profile] mischief5's help and talents (okay, she did alll the heavy lifting - I just looked pretty)

That's a big bunch of banana-skin wearing Martians munching tree bark. You my, lovely, supportive SGA fandom are the best, most supportive family a girl could ask for.

... Redefine what"community" means to you.

Yeah, I've got that one covered. *g*

Just so this post isn't all about me, how has your SGA family supported you? Care to share?

WORD. Which is probably why so many of us identified with the show in so many ways. ♥

Every comment ever left on anything I have posted is a sign of my fandom's love and support :) And you encourage me in so many ways, like in setting up a comm, and taking a plane across the Atlantic, or trying out new series and pairings ;)

I know that you would support me in whatever I decided to do, and I love you for that *FAMILY GROUP HUG*

We might even make some wicked suggestions *waggles eyebrows*

I laughed out loud at this! Yes indeed, we can definitely count on you for that!

It was simply *there* when I was lost in my life for a bit. A place where I could go online and forget all about the things I didn't want to think about because I couldn't change anything. Enjoying interaction with my fellow fans and generally basking in the good that is fandom and SGA helped me get through very difficult times. I don't know how I had made it through otherwise.

Yes, I do have RL-friends but interacting with them was - for practical reasons - a big part of the problem back then.

Now the problem is - well, not solved but waaaaay better - and im still in fandom because SGA and it's fandom is an amazing thing I don't want to miss anymore. :-)

Community for me is having fandom friends...

Some friends I've had since the days of newsletters and fanzines. I joined LJ because my X-Files friends tempted me with stuff you couldn't put on the yahoo lists. Then I found the SGA communities. I still read, and write, in both these fandoms (plus a few others) and I felt AT HOME.

Other things i've enjoyed in SGA fandom, is ths SGA_santa gift exchange, in ehich I have taken part for a few years now. The challenges that are put forward, some I've taken up, others I simply hadn't got the time to spare. I managed tofinish the icon_100 table challege, the Hewligan_100 challenge is still (slowly) being worked through. I've also found that other fans a very friendly. I travelled to Manchester in 2006, to see Joe Flanigan, and I was sitting alone in the bar when I was suddenly surrounded by SGA fans. They'd seen me in the queues for Joe and decided to keep me company for a while. It was fun.

P.S. Should I tell you about the convention I'm attending in April?

I shall be attending Chevron 8.1 at the Radisson Edwardian Hotel, Heathrow.
The Guests of interest are Joe Flanigan, Rachael Luttrell, Corin Nemec and Martin Wood.

This is their Website (http://massiveevents.co.uk/chevron81/#.UuF6PbTFKM8)

I wonder if anyone will bring up the fact that Joe and Corin were in a film together some years' ago.

Oh, wow! While I haven't been posting hardly at all lately, fandom has been keeping me busy and sane this winter when winter usually leaves me quite depressed (SAD -- Seasonal Affective Disorder). I can't find my muse to write or do art, but the richness that is SGA means reading and saving fic for my Kindle.

It always amazes me how much love and fun and creativity went into this fandom; the sheer joy in every story; the hard work as well. Everyone here is so smart! (Well, not everyone: We've all backbuttoned out of a few doozies in our time. Happens in every fandom. *eyeroll*) But mostly, there's always been a shared sense of generosity, with words, and art, and fic finding, and fact finding; and there's something for everyone in SGA, from the thinky to the kinky, from canon to the absurd -- sometimes, all within the same story. *grin*

But a fandom is only as good as the people who create it, and this one is rock solid. A lot of folks have drifted but the foundation of fun remains. The best friends I have I've made right here in SGA. I think that's why it's so hard to move on. This is home.

SGA fandom is a fabulous community! But it wouldn't be so fabulous without its pillars of support, like you my dear, to run comms, and fests, and Bangs, and contests, and the like.

How will the fandom know it likes wearing banana skins, unless someone brave and stalwart like you gives them a safe and encouraging place to do so? SGA has been blessed with such great pillars of support, and so many wonderful safe creative spaces where we can allow our collective imaginations to run wild--and then we ALL reap the benefits.

This is so true. Fandom is strong only so long as there are people who love it and encourage everyone else to do the same. :-)

SGA completely changed my life. I've made some bad decisions in the last ten years, ones that I can't change now, but I will never regret the time and energy spent right here in fandom. And the amount of suckage I deal with now is worth what I've gained through this fandom.

My fandom friends know more about what's going on in my life on a daily basis than my RL friends--mostly because trying to coordinate a gathering between RL friends is like negotiating at Middle East Peace Talks--everyone's so busy and on such different schedules!

Fandom is the gif that makes me smile when it arrives unexpectedly in an email. The Tweet from a friend. The shared glee over a new moment or an old one revisited. Most days, it is the thing that makes the day more palatable, more bearable. It is the adopted family whose bonds are stronger than those of flesh and blood because it is the family of your own choosing.

It is the thing you look forward to sharing--the date marked on the calendar, the yeast to an otherwise unleavened dough. SGA has spoiled me for all other fandoms, TBH. The depth and breadth of talent here will be hard to beat.

Oh, YES! That!

And I think that a lot of SGA-fans think similar and that's why they like the "team"-aspect of SGA so much. "Team" is one of the most important focuses of SGA fandom and I bet that's why so much of us love that scene from "Sateda" in which John tries to explain to Teyla what they mean to him.

I know that's one of the reasons the show really resonated with me--the idea that a bunch of Misfits in Space could together be greater than their individual selves, and that the Family-of-Your-Choosing can be so important. :-)

I so need to re-watch that again--like this weekend!

I've been in many fandoms over the years but Stargate is the one which got me out of the house actually meeting up with like minded people, but it's been those people within the Atlantis community who have really made me feel like I belong. It took me a while to pluck up the nerve to actively join in but I have been made so welcome. I've made so many wonderful friends, most of you on LJ I have yet to meet in person but I really hope to put that right one of these days!
