"It's a ship; it goes through the Gate."

Next to the Atlantis Stargate itself, this is my favorite Ancient tech. The stories - the possibilities - the likelihood of sex in the jumper.... *coff*
I always had the feeling that there was much more here to explore than the show gave us.
Let's give these babies some love!

Date: 2013-06-25 07:24 am (UTC)Built by the Ancients thousands of years ago the Puddlejumper is an essential part of the Atlantis-expedition. Those jumpers are small multi-purpose transporters that can go through the gate and are fit for space travel. Aside from a perfect cloak they are well armed and agile. They can only be operated by people that have the ATA-gene, like most of the technology in Atlantis.
This model was built as a giveaway for the SpaceDays 2006 in Darmstadt (that's a German city). The biggest difficulty regarding this project was the laborious search for informations on the original. Except for some photos there isn't mucht to find. Blueprints, layouts, indications of size or graphs were nowhere to find.
In the end I had to develop the model strictly on the foundation of pictures from the series. The size of the actors and of known articles/items served as a source for the determination of dimensions of a jumper. The reproduction of the surface texture was also time-consuming.
Meanwhile it has to be added that my cardboard model shows the puddlejumper from the first season of the series because if you look at some screenshots of the second season you notice that the producers had a new stage prop built which is considereably different from the first one.
Description of the model:
- punch-out sheet for the experienced builder of cardboard models
- 1 x A4-page, 47xparts
- measurements of the model: 12,8 cm length, 8 cm width
- can be built with extended and retracted position of the drive pods
And there's also a download link - I suppose you can download the punch-out sheet to build your own jumper. :-)

Date: 2013-06-25 06:57 am (UTC)Given the size of a jumper and the place in the back of it, it is clearly constructed to carry a load if necessary, be it people or goods. So I assume - while it is armed and can do considerable damage - it's not built explicitely for fighting purposes. After all, why built fighter-crafts that are bigger than necessary? If the Ancients used fighters as well (and not only the big battleships) they would have looked different from the jumpers, I guess, and would have had an "as advanced as possible" reaction/reaction time to the ATA-carriers that piloted them.
So, I'm still waiting to come across of a story that has the expedition stumbling over a fighter repair bay in the bowels of Atlantis and getting in all kinds of adventures/troubles with this advanced technology. *g*
