more of the unsung
Aug. 29th, 2010 08:42 pmLurkers are beautiful.
I know, because I was one for years.
This is for all that quiet, shy appreciation that spills over into fandom.

*tries to gently coax you out of the woodwork*

Date: 2010-08-30 12:55 am (UTC)But! I am friends with EquuZ and Madison and they kind of gently pried me out of lurkerdom with their squee and fangirl noises (it's like a mating call, really) and here I am!
Don't worry, lurkers! The water is fine! I promise! *splashes around happily in the shallow end*

Date: 2010-08-30 02:45 am (UTC)I would probably be a lot less quiet if the majority of my interaction with the fandom weren't two to three-year old podfics. It wasn't the intent, but this is a nice encouragement to track down creators more often to leave comments.

Date: 2010-08-30 05:49 am (UTC)More than one of us has started a journal with the intention of leaving comments, and that pulled us into the fandom so much more. Comments led to more connections and making friends led to participating led to participating even more and lots of fun and laughs.
It happened naturally for me and some others but if you're trying intentionally I could see how it would be intimidating - at least for me it definitely would be! So a couple of journals I very much think you should start with are
And of course there are so many other great people out there - I mention them in particular because their bjfriday was I think rather interegral to my own period of developing more fandom interaction.

Date: 2010-08-30 03:53 pm (UTC)Podfics! We definitely have to do a podfic Squeee post!
I am so horrible about commenting unless I happen to catch it just right, so I know what you mean.
I do comment a little better on older fic than I used to because I'm so terrified the the author will think no one is reading and take it down. *shudder*

Date: 2010-08-30 03:55 am (UTC)But the show ending was a life changing event for me. I found that I want to write, and I love making icons...Photoshop and I are getting really chummy. Heck, I don't even know much about Photoshop, but it's been fun to learn.
Sorry...going on too long...my biggest vice. But I guess what I want to say is that lurkers don't really know what they're missing. Interaction with great people, having a story ripped to shreds in a last fic writer standing challenge (only to have other people in the same challenge love it. Sort of made me go, huh?) The point is to have fun and fun, I am having. Fun with great people who all love a great show.
So lurkers! I am a reformed lurker...join us!
PS...Sheppard's lurking, if you can't tell...

Date: 2010-08-30 03:15 pm (UTC)I lurked for almost two years, commenting sporadically on stories I read (surely the author could intuit that I loved the story, right?) before I ventured into posting on my own journal. In my case, danceswithgary and goddess47 and velocitygrass were sweet enough to reply, and then I asked how I could be more involved, and decided to try beta/cheerleading, and then I found Melagan and Neeve, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Also - friend people whose stories you like. They'll often friend you back. Then you have a friends list to read, and the people start to matter to you, as you come to know them...it's a delicious cycle.
Yay for lurkers! Yay for soon-to-be former lurkers!!! *g*
