Lurkers are beautiful.

I know, because I was one for years.

This is for all that quiet, shy appreciation that spills over into fandom.

Ah HA! See? There? Lurker? That was ME! I mean, I was reading SGA fanfic for months before I ever even commented on a story, and it was about a year of lurking before I mentioned the show on my own LJ.

But! I am friends with EquuZ and Madison and they kind of gently pried me out of lurkerdom with their squee and fangirl noises (it's like a mating call, really) and here I am!

Don't worry, lurkers! The water is fine! I promise! *splashes around happily in the shallow end*

I would probably be a lot less quiet if the majority of my interaction with the fandom weren't two to three-year old podfics. It wasn't the intent, but this is a nice encouragement to track down creators more often to leave comments.

:D!

More than one of us has started a journal with the intention of leaving comments, and that pulled us into the fandom so much more. Comments led to more connections and making friends led to participating led to participating even more and lots of fun and laughs.

It happened naturally for me and some others but if you're trying intentionally I could see how it would be intimidating - at least for me it definitely would be! So a couple of journals I very much think you should start with are [livejournal.com profile] melagan (the author of this post) and [livejournal.com profile] neevebrody. These two friends have themes for John/Rodney porn/etc.. they'll post something and encourage others to leave their thoughts, or fic or drawings based on the theme. (Check here (http://melagan.livejournal.com/tag/b-j%20friday) and here (http://neevebrody.livejournal.com/tag/bj%20friday).) I've always felt welcome in their journals leaving comments - not only replies to what others say but my own thoughts and ideas. I think they try very hard to make a welcoming environment and I'm sure neither of them would mind comments to old entries, thoughts on new ones, being added to your flist if you wanted, or what have you. :)

And of course there are so many other great people out there - I mention them in particular because their bjfriday was I think rather interegral to my own period of developing more fandom interaction.

I second that that like you wouldn't believe! I would have never gotten up the nerve to post an actual story if it weren't for the two of them. They're grrrrrrreat! :::totally channeling Tony the Tiger there!::::

It's always a bit intimidating to make the jump to a new fandom! Thank you for the welcome :)

There should always be podfic squee! One of the best parts about discovering this show and its fandom has been discovering so many new and fantastic readers.

I was a lurker on Gateworld's forum forever...then joined, don't even remember my username...but never joined in. I only started writing fanfic after the show ended. I was in pain; I had to have more. I posted my first story on FF.net less than a year ago. What a switch it was to re-learn how to write descriptive fiction...I have been doing business writing forever; dry, human resource policy crap.

But the show ending was a life changing event for me. I found that I want to write, and I love making icons...Photoshop and I are getting really chummy. Heck, I don't even know much about Photoshop, but it's been fun to learn.

Sorry...going on too long...my biggest vice. But I guess what I want to say is that lurkers don't really know what they're missing. Interaction with great people, having a story ripped to shreds in a last fic writer standing challenge (only to have other people in the same challenge love it. Sort of made me go, huh?) The point is to have fun and fun, I am having. Fun with great people who all love a great show.

So lurkers! I am a reformed lurker...join us!

PS...Sheppard's lurking, if you can't tell...

Yes, to this!!

I lurked for almost two years, commenting sporadically on stories I read (surely the author could intuit that I loved the story, right?) before I ventured into posting on my own journal. In my case, danceswithgary and goddess47 and velocitygrass were sweet enough to reply, and then I asked how I could be more involved, and decided to try beta/cheerleading, and then I found Melagan and Neeve, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Also - friend people whose stories you like. They'll often friend you back. Then you have a friends list to read, and the people start to matter to you, as you come to know them...it's a delicious cycle.

Yay for lurkers! Yay for soon-to-be former lurkers!!! *g*
