Uh, I hope posting this here is ok - I checked the community info and it sounds like it's ok for everyone to post here, and I have to make my delight about this show known, and this community sounded perfect for that.
I know that I am *WAY* behind the curve on this, but I literally just watched all five seasons of Atlantis in three weeks, and while, yes, there are some weak spots (the pacing of the last season irritated me - I think because I knew that there were only 4 and then 3 and then 2 and ... episodes left, and they pulled some major rabbits out of hats in that last episode, but anyway I digress...) my overall glee and enjoyment far outweights all of them. I wish I'd watched that show when it aired, so I could have had people to squee with in real time.
I came so, so close to doing it, too - I watched the pilot when it aired, but gave up on it after about 40 minutes - because Col. Sumner annoyed me too much to bear watching! ARGH!
And then they showed a repeat of the pilot some months back on TV, and I zapped into it, pretty much to see ... Col. Sumner being all heroic, and, you know ... dead. ("Wait, WHAT!")
So I bought the "complete series" DVD box set and ... yeah, resurfaced three days ago all teary eyed because it was over, and, yes, silly sometimes, but it hurt in a good way a lot of other times, and, yes, some episodes and stupid decisions annoyed me, but the show made me laugh and the show made me cry (Grodin! Carson! Elizabeth!!!) and I think I'll need to re-watch it all now. And read lots of fic.
I've been blogging about watching it on my journal some, and if anyone wants to read my story of discovery (or talk Atlantis with a total (albeit enthusiastic) newbie, I'd love to make some Atlantis fan friends!! (My current LJ friends are very tolerant of and bemused my new addiction, but have not seen the show...).

Date: 2012-09-12 09:45 pm (UTC)I don't have many smart!Elizabeth fic recs because I came into the fandom when she'd already died, but I'm sure you'll find them. And you won't run out of reading material for a long time - I expect the bigger problem will be knowing where to start... ;)

Once David Hewlett (a big Dr. Who fan) was asked what he'd do if he had a TARDIS. He said he'd go back to season 1 and do it all again. I know how he feels. :-)
I'd love some good ST:TOS and 2009 fic recs while you're at it...

Date: 2012-09-13 12:27 am (UTC)I adored Elizabeth Weir and I hated that she left the show. The same with Carson(*poor Carson*) and of course Ford.. :(
As for Otp.. I'm a multi-shipper. I tend to see characters with a lot of different people. I can never settle on just one.
And I see that you're a Star Trek TOS fan too. May I say you have excellent tastes in fandoms. *g*

Date: 2012-09-13 02:36 am (UTC)One of the fandom things I've been enjoying is Joe Malozzi's daily blog. Joe is a former writer and showrunner for Stargate Atlantis (well as SG-1 and SGU).
Recently, he's been reminiscing about the Atlantis shows, episode by episode. He might write a bit about something from behind-the-scenes, or about what he did or didn't like about an episode. He might share pics or concept drawings too. Right now he's in the first half of season 3.
Also, sometimes he does a little in-blog contest with signed scripts for prizes.
