Rewatch : Hide and Seek
Jun. 17th, 2011 09:47 pm After receiving Dr. Beckett's revolutionary gene therapy, which aims to allow those born without the Ancient gene to interact with Ancient technology, McKay manages to activate a device that shields him from any and all physical harm. Despite his temporary invulnerability, McKay is forced to swallow his fear in order to help rid the city of a dark, formless entity which is feeding on the city's most vital energy.

Date: 2011-06-18 02:10 am (UTC)Seeing Rodney so eager and willing to jump up onto the exam table so he can finally (F*I*N*A*L*L*Y) get HIS own gene is priceless. And, then, the range of expressions flitting over his face when he learns that - well - it's not FDA approved. But, as Carson assures him, it's approved in the Pegasus Galaxy!!!
Oh, Grodin (again). And it's the first time I've noticed how he and Weir are almost the same height (although I believe her fluffy hair gives her a couple of fake inches.
Oh, wow. I never noticed the huge THUMP Rodney's body made when hitting the floor.
And ... this will never, ever, in the history of history, get old:
Gleeful John: "I shot him." /changes expression to show that it wasn't all that much of a bad thing/ "In the leg."
Okay, I'm going back to watching.

Also, hee to the 10,000 year old dead plants.

Well, I think that anything can go out from behind the shield but cannot enter.

Date: 2011-06-18 02:19 am (UTC)And how quickly does Rodney go from "In-vul-nerable" to "I'm a dead man"?
Oh ... opening credits. Hmmmmm. I forgot that the and David Hewlett as had a different background (the ZedPM and a much younger Hewlett).

I lol'd

Date: 2011-06-18 02:41 am (UTC)Oh, naive, unsuspecting Elizabeth: "The Ancients were smart enough to build fail-safes into their other technology...."
Oh, John, telling horror stories to the kids. OTOH, Jason and his hockey mask (what's hockey) can't compare to the Wraith.
It seems funny to be seeing Athosians all over the place in Atlantis.
Hee - the Hail Mary pass. And John should not be allowed to explain ANYTHING.
Role playing hijinks.
Jinto: "You get to be the Wraith. I get to be Major Sheppard." Uh-huh. Hero worship already.
Thank goodness Wex was smart enough to come back to Halling to report that Jinto was missing.
Oooh. I love seeing the lit-up empty corridors in Atlantis. They've already shown that a couple of times.
Okay, back to more watching.

Date: 2011-06-18 02:48 am (UTC)And then, Sheppard's all, 'he must've passed out.' and Rodney, barely coherent says, 'thanks for saying the other thing.' And then finally Sheppard explains something right, 'That was a Hail Mary!'

Date: 2011-06-18 03:03 am (UTC)Oooh, that's what I should poll for - levels of snark. Anyone who reads this - what do you think of adding a snark poll for each episode?
Something like: This episode was:
epically snarky
snaky enough to get a couple of laughs from me
meh
snark free

Date: 2011-06-18 03:17 am (UTC)Though, what bad timing for Halling's prayers to the Ancestors to be answered with lights going off and Rodney fainting. Oops!
And, then, seeing the look between Peter and John, aka "Just WHAT is this shit?"
Okay, they've just stepped into the ... closet.
John: "It's definitely not a closet." Ya think?
Rodney: "It must be a transporter."
John, peeved: "We can name it later."
Rodney: "I need to know everything you touched."
Jinto's face: Oops, I've been busted.
Oh, wow. Look at the makeshift infirmary before they made it into a real
boyset. It's fascinating to go back in time because hearing Rodney talk about the Ancients and Ascension seems so odd - but they didn't know this until he mentioned it. And there's John making his adorkable faces.
Oh, hai, John. It's time to sacrifice yourself: "I'll do it."
And, then, Rodney's shield falls off when Elizabeth suggests HE could operate the mouse-trap!
Whoa. The disdain in Elizabeth's voice: "I had a feeling."
I love Halling as a father. And I'm wondering why they didn't make him Teyla's baby-daddy when Rachel became pregnant and they had to fit that into the story line. There seems to be much more of a natural affection between them.
Okay, on to the scary conclusion.

Date: 2011-06-18 03:30 am (UTC)The ghost story was amazing, but kids that grew up with the Wraith as an ever present shadow - yeah, not so much.
John's explanations make me think of mine. I hate explaining anything (can't understand football, anyway), and to someone like Teyla that has absolutely no cultural references to help her out - that whole scene was so funny.

Date: 2011-06-18 03:36 am (UTC)And ... "Size doesn't matter."
SNORFLE
Yay, yay, yay. Teyla is VERY smart, staring at the Stargate and reaching some very good conclusions.
MEGA YAY, YAY, YAY when Rodney removes the shield from his jacket and we hear the heroic swelling of the music.
Oh, Rodney's woobie-face. Look what I'm willing to do for others.
I love seeing the weird SFX of stuff floating around Rodney when he's inside the energy creature.
And it's gratifying to see how quickly Elizabeth changes her tune because he did save the day, the expedition and Atlantis. Also, Elizabeth did thank Teyla.
Yay for cranky Rodney when the medical personnel finally show up. What was keeping them? They couldn't run?!?!?

Date: 2011-06-18 08:12 am (UTC)Remember towards the end of 'Sunday' - some folks were confused when Rodney was referred to as Carson's best friend. I can see how they're setting it up here, and in the party scene of 'Rising' - I can't remember if we keep seeing it this season. They are so cute.
And Sheppard is so cute.
Jinto is adorable.
Elizabeth annoyed me though, I didn't like her talking behind Rodney's back. (Even though it appears that she's right.)
The first time around I was irritated at the Big-Black-Cloud-Monster. I thought it was cliche and hilariously low-budget. Now, I kind of like that it's more-or-less only a plot device to have some threat and danger. It lets us concentrate on getting to know the characters. Also, there are so many extras - maybe they had to scrimp on the FX part of the budget this epi.

Date: 2011-06-18 08:38 am (UTC)The way he suddenly goes silent when he's really about to act with courage (even if he's scared to death) is so much in contrast to his usual persona, and yet it fits perfectly.
Kudos to David Hewlett on this (and so much more!), brilliant acting (as usual :p).

Date: 2011-06-18 08:54 am (UTC)What did they do to Rodney's hair? Worst bangs ever.
Elizabeth! She was snide to my dear Rodney. Grrr.
Teyla is empathic; thinks outside the box, is awesome.
Rodney gets hero music!
Scientist Rodney takes time to look around inside energy cloud being.
Yay! Everybody loves Rodney.

Date: 2011-06-19 06:00 pm (UTC)The humor in this is so great as well. I've watched the balcony-tossing scenes and, "In-vul-ner-a-ble!" over and over again. The look of boyish pleasure on their faces is so fun--especially John. I'm not sure we ever see John this unashamedly gleeful and happy again.
I have to agree that I didn't care much for Weir's dealings with either Teyla or Rodney's insecurities. I think the writers were trying to show the contrast between earlier feelings and the trust and respect that came later, but they were very heavy-handed about it, as they often were.
