It always felt to me like he was drawn to the chair. Of all the places he could have wondered to in the facility, he went straight for the control chair.
I always crack up at that. I love Rodney's face when he sees that someone is in the chair and he's making it work. There's just so much glee that the thing is finally working the way he knew it could!
The most heartbreaking moment of Vegas for me was when Rodney was showing Sheppard the chair. He's obviously drawn to it, he hesitates in following Rodney out of the room. And then he just leaves... it breaks my heart every time.
At first, I thought well, if he'd just given in to the urge to sit in it his entire life could have worked out differently. McKay was right there. He would have seen that Sheppard had the ancient gene.
But presumably McKay already knew Sheppard had the gene, he'd met him in another universe. And yet they'd never sought their own John out.
