The Brotherhood Week Cont'd
Oct. 14th, 2012 01:02 pmThe B story for this episode didn't take much time to tell but didn't actually need all that much in any case; it was the setup for the rest of the season's various storylines. In the relatively small amount of time it took, this part of the story did more than just work as setup; it foreshadowed many of the problems the expedition would later face, all wrapped up in a nail-biting, CGI dogfight with a Wraith dart.

Zelenka: "It seems to be scanning us." (Yes, it is, but that's not all it's doing. That Wraith scoopy beam works both ways.)

Beckett: "I'm a doctor, not a fighter pilot!" The Beckett/McCoy parallels are fun callbacks to our roots in sci-fi pop culture but this is an important statement. Only officers (and warrant officers) can be pilots. Major Sheppard is the only qualified pilot in the expedition. While anyone with the ATA gene can operate a puddlejumper, Sheppard is the only one with combat flight experience. This isn't just a funny line for Beckett: they're sending two NCOs -- Stackhouse and Markham -- and a medical doctor up to engage in aerial combat with a Wraith dart.

Even three against one, they're hopelessly outclassed. It's like asking any three of us to jump into a Cup car and race against a professional NASCAR driver.

With fairly predictable results.

Bates: "Markham and Smith."

No words for this.

Scanning? Or beaming down?

(The CGI is amazing.)

Bates: Yes!
Beckett: I didn't do that!

Victory -- but at a price. (So much respect for Weir here. She's not a military mind but she has the guts to give the necessary orders, even knowing she may be sending her people to die. No waffling, no hand-wringing. This is leadership.) (NB: I really wish the writers had written Weir [women] like this all the time.)
